Resolutions, here we come...maybe
As every year, New Year’s
resolutions come and go in my
world. From less sweets to
more exercise and healthier
eating habits, it becomes a re-
dundant process for me.
Goes to show how long they
last, as I write this inhaling a
big, juicy burger with the
works and a side of rings.
There have been a lot of res-
olutions in my lifetime with
only a handful that I can recall
that still hold today.
But like every year, I’ll do
my best to make them last
more than a couple of weeks.
I do know for sure that one
of my resolutions for 2013

Safety. Wharton had headed
EJMSMS for six years.
• The Silsbee Tigers base-
ball team had six players earn
first team all district honors.
They included Jacob Murray,
Michael Simmons, Dusty Thi-
bodeaux, Adam Valencia, Jor-
dan Gore and Colby LeBlanc.
Montana Garcia was named to
second team.
• Texas Governor Rick
Perry made a stop in Lumber-
ton to discuss his 5-point
budget. Perry also offered his
support to District 19 State
Representative James White.
With re-districting, White
faced long-time State Repre-
sentative Mike Hamilton in
the primary and won.
• The threat of hurricane
season to the forefront late in
May. June 1, marks the begin-
ning of hurricane season, and

will be to become an even bet-
ter person. Even though Em a
pretty good person by my
standards, it doesn’t hurt to
improve and be a little better.
Maybe this year will be re-
worded to include eating
healthier foods along with my
everyday meals.
I’m not one to stop eating
meat or beef for that matter.
I’m very pro beef and live by
the words of Sam Elliot,
do in preparation. The de-
struction and aftermath of
Hurricane Rita in 2005, made
preparedness for hurricane
season a priority for most res-
idents in Hardin County.
June
• Hardin County resident
Lonnie Brown was again
fighting for his release from
prison. Brown was convicted
of manslaughter in the 2006
shooting of Justin Slider at the
trailer park owned by Brown.
Brown reportedly had gone
to Slider’s trailer to talk to him
regarding his dogs. Slider had
two pit bulls and Brown had
received a complaint that one
of the dogs had attacked
someone. Upon arrival at
Slider’s trailer, one of the dogs
attacked Brown multiple
times, forcing him to pull out
his 9mm handgun, for which
he was licensed to carry, and
“Beef, it’s what’s for dinner.”
But I can say that adding
more vegetables to the dinner
table will greatly improve my
eating habits.
Something else I need to
consider is that I’m sure there
will be no hope for the NFL
team I adore the most.
I may have to dig deep and
make a resolution to not
backup the quarterback of this
team any longer. Though I
have gotten blue in the face to
back him up when others have
talked him down, I think it’s
now time to see the light.
Don’t ask why I had stayed
on the bandwagon so long. I
shoot the dog. That brought a
young woman, reportedly
Slider’s girlfriend out of the
trailer. She immediately hit
Brown. Slider soon followed
and reportedly jumped on
Brown.
During the fight, the gun
discharged several times, with
one round striking Slider in
the abdomen. Brown has
maintained from the begin-
ning that the shooting was in
self-defense. At the time of the
shooting, Slider was 19 years-
old, Brown was 65 years-old.
• A Silsbee man was killed
on May 31, when his vehicle
crossed the center line on FM
770, colliding head-on with
another vehicle. Ernest Jenk-
ins was pronounced dead at
the scene. The driver of the
other vehicle was transported
to a Beaumont hospital with
multiple injuries.
• Evadale ISD teacher
was trying not to second guess
myself and put the blame in
other areas of the football
game, but now it is clear.
It took me several years to
see the light. And finally I re-
alize.
I do know that I will keep
my resolutions to a minimum
in hopes that I won’t be re-
publishing this very same ar-
ticle next year for my 2014
resolutions.
Hopefully, this is the year
that I adhere to my words.
In the meantime, have a
prosperous new year and keep
the resolutions alive - maybe.
