Predicting what comes in 2014
This week Jan and I com-
pleted our 22nd year as pub-
lishers of The Silsbee Bee.
That seems hard to believe. In
a few years the paper will be
100 years old and during that
time it has had basically three
owners.... the founder
William Harris, the Read
brothers David and Bobby,
and the two of us.
I came to town with dark
hair, a somewhat slim 6-4,
200-pound frame and three
children ages 8 to 16. Today
my oldest child is 38 - the age
I was when I came to Silsbee.
Times were tough when we
came to town. The first year
might have been the toughest
we had in our 22 years.
As the first year progressed,
my dreams changed to a hope
that we could survive three or
four years and sell the paper
and get most of our money
back.
Things did change for the
better. We had some awesome
years and the Bee proved to be
what we had dreamed it might
be.
Things are different now
than they were 22 years ago
when we came to Silsbee and
on this day I have taken a few
moments to reflect on how I
think they will be in the fu-

a parking lot located at FM

James, 18, was arrested for the
crime.
• Dean Bailey Swift, 45, of
Lumberton was sentenced to
federal prison on February 23
when he plead guilty to child
pornography violations.
• Rash of thefts at Walmarts
around the country hit Hardin
County. Silsbee and Lumber-
ton police officers were busy
with several thefts that mostly
involved electronics such as
Ipads and laptops.

ture.
First let me say we have
elected an administration that
dreams of a different future
for the country and for the
electorate than I do. I may dis-
agree with them, but they have
been elected and it is their
dream that we will follow for
at least the next four years.
Based on this, I believe that
the administration will at-
tempt to move its agenda as
far as it can in the next two
years. This is what they did in
their first two years 2008-
2009, when they felt they had
a mandate from the voters to
do the things they wanted.
Obamacare will be the law
of the land. The only obstacle
in the path of this is the will-
ingness of medical profes-
sionals to participate. They
may tire of the regulations and
decide to pack it in. No med-
ical program will work with-
out professionals. To be
honest, we have been taken by
insurance companies that the
old ways may not have
worked in the future anyway.
that allegedly paid out cus-
tomers at a local convenience
store in Evadale re-opened
after a bust in mid-July.
• Timothy Arthur Steinbarth
pled guilty to possession of
child pornography on August
7.
Federal officials conducted
a search warrant of Stein-
barth's residence in Lumber-
ton and found more than 100
videos and 100 images of
child pornography.
• Two Silsbee residents re-
ceived the honors of becom-
ing inductees into the Prairie
View Interscholastic League
Coaches Association.
Taxes will go up. First they
will jump for the rich - those
earning $250,000 or more.
This will not provide enough
money and soon taxes will
climb for everyone. This will
not effect me in the short term
but it may in the long term.
There will be no reduction
in special interest programs or
entitlements. This is the
Obama goal to find ways to
share the wealth.
Look for there to be a push
to have more gay rights. An
effort to open borders will
probably occur in the short
term.
There may be some regula-
tions on gun ownership but
don't expect full blown gun
control. The politicians are
scared of this one. They have
a short term memory but they
remember what happened in
the 90's when Clinton pushed
gun control. People like Jack
Brookes got voted out of of-
fice.
The thing that scares me
most is that there is not
enough income to fund the so-
cial programs that Obama fa-
vors.
In the short term, the gov-
ernment can print more
money and push the country
into super inflation. This will
Walter Land Sr. and Elester
Whitmore Sr. were both in-
ducted into the Hall of Fame
in a ceremony that was held
on July 28 in San Antonio.
• Lumberton gets okay to
add sale of alcohol option to
November 6 ballot.
• Ashley Lea Quinn, 27, of
Beaumont was traveling south
on FM 92 when her vehicle
crossed the centerline. Quinn
overcorrected and caused her
vehicle to overturn. Quinn
was pronounced dead at the
scene along with passenger
Ashley Nichole Buckley, 24,
of Silsbee.
DPS reports stated that oc-
allow the government to pay
its debts with cheaper dollars.
If this does not work, look for
the government to install a
wealth tax. I have heard peo-
ple talking about this tax.
They would assess your
wealth and then have you send
1% to the government.
Now this one would affect
me. Over the years, I've built
us some wealth. Some of it
does not generate much in-
come. I'm not sure some of it
could cover the 1 %.
We'll have to wait and see
about this one.
When you get away from
political matters I have a few
predictions for the coming
year. First, I predict it will be a
warmer, dryer year, but I hope
I am wrong. We need some
wet, wet weather.
Second, I predict that this
will be the year that Silsbee
High School wins a state
championship at something.
I'm not sure what but I have
the feeling that one is about to
happen.
Third and lastly. I predict -
no I wish everyone a very
happy and prosperous year
where the grace of God falls
on everyone.

was indicted by the Hardin

fices after she was arrested

cident on June 11.
Mayo shot her aunt in the

Deputies were serving a men-
tal health warrant on Mayo.
