To Entertain
LHS Quintet
Lubbock’s Cowhands travel to
Amarillo tonight to mdet the Am-
arillo Yannigans at 6 in the Arm-
ory.
OPENING FOR the Cowhands
will be Tommy Keyton, Chris Cox,
Wesley Verner, Don Burrell and
Steve Leftwich. Coach Don Apple
said that Jimmy Poe, Freddy Dick-
son, Ronnie Shuffield and Nello
Armstrong will also see a lot of
action.
The Cowhands now have a 4-2
district record and a 9-3 season
slate. Coach Don Apple indicated
that “the team is progressing as
well as could be expected at this
time but they have a long way to
go before they will be able to play
varsity ball.”
LAST TUESDAY Lubbock de-
feated the Plainview “B” team 60-
52. Verner was the leading scorer
with 17 points.
Over the holidays Lubbock play-
ed three games, winning two and
losing one. Caprock was defeated
54-41 and Palo Duro fell to the
tune of 58-49. The loss came at.
the hands of Borger 66-63 in over-

Lubbock took sole possession of.
first place last Tuesday night in
Lubbock by defeating the Plain-
view Bulldogs 77-48 while Monte-
rey lost to Tascosa 39-38. This
dropped the previously undefeated
Plainsmen into second spot with
a 5-1 mark.
TONIGHT'S starters will prob-
ably be guards Larry Doyle and
Buddy Fulgham, forwards Gary
Washington and Randy Wester-
burg and center Joe Dobbs. Others
expected to see some action are
Joe Ince and Dorian Clawson.
The Sandies, who are double-'
tough to beat at home, lost 75-70
to Pampa last Tuesday night to
drop into eighth place in the dis-
trict with a 1-5 mark.
“Amarillo’s district record of 1-5
is very misleading,” comments
Coach Max O’Banion. “They have
lost several very close games. The
Sandies lost last Friday to Tascosa
64-60 and lost to Monterey on
Dec. 31, 41-39.”
PROBABLE starters for Coach
Johnny Ethridge will be guards
Sam Guest (5-4) and Ronnie Walk-
er (6-0), forwards Stan Dodge (6-4)
and Gene Carver (6-4) and center
David Jackson (6-5).
“They have good height, are
very fast and have three returning
starters,” states Coach O’Banion.
“Coach Ethridge has one of the
finest boys in the district in Walk-
er. He can do everything well.”
IN LUBBOCK'S 77-48 rout of
Plainview, the Westerners hit 57
per cent of their field goals. At the
free throw line, they hit 19 of 21.
Junior Washington was the
leading scorer with 20 points but
he received plenty of help from
Fulgham, who hit 17, and Dobbs
and Doyle with 14 and 11 respec-
tively.
DOBBS, WHO grabbed off 18
rebounds, teamed with Washing-
ton, who had 10, to dominate the
backboards and keep 6-7 Ronnie
Peret of the Bulldogs in check.
Peret did manage 19 points for the
night.
Plainview came out in a zone
defense the first quarter and
O’Banion felt his team really re-
acted well to it. Lubbock led 26-9
at the end of the quarter.
"AFTER WE GOT the big lead
we were able to take advantage of
their mistakes,” the Lubbock coach
observed. “They had to gamble to
get back in the game and we just
stayed hot.”
The halftime score was 43-25.
The remaining two quarters were
played on fairly even terms.
FULGHAM continues to pace
the Westerners in scoring—both
for the season and in district play.
The senior guard has 316 points
for the season for an 18.9 average
and 116 points in district play for
a 19.3 mark, second only to Tas-
cosa’s Bill Bogan. Bogan scored
12 points in the Rebel win over
Monterey to boost his total to 133.
DOYLE HAS 197 points (11.6)
for the season and 68 (11.3) for
district. Washington has 212 (12.5)
for the season and 76 (12.7) for
district, while Dobbs has 200 (11.2)
for season play and 77 (12.8) for
district action.
