places during Monday evening’s seventh annual Port Aransas
Dine Around. Here, diners enter the Mexican restaurant under
the light of a welcoming neon sign. Sponsors called the event
the most successful Dine Around yet. A handful of restaurants
in the same area let diners stroll from one to the other.

Dine Around: A fabulous feast
I he seventh annual Port Aransas
Dine Around on Monday was a huge
success. Every year I look forward
to it. It’s great fun to go around town
and sample the best dishes that
many of the local restaurants fea-
ture on their menus. We’re fortu-
nate to have such a wide variety of
good eateries in tow n!
This gustable event was well at-
tended by visitors and residents alike.
It was also great fun to see old friends,
munch and visit at each place, meet
new friends while in line to get in,
anti say hello to the owners or man-
agers and their staff of the partici-
pating restaurants and .>tnre>. (jue:>t.>
were warmly greeted everywhere
they stopped on the iist of i 5 restau-
rants and clubs, and the many shops,
boutiques and art galleries that
served wonderful desserts. It’s a gus-
tatory event that’s a tail of a race to
see if one can make it to all 20 places
in the allotted three hours. You hail
to scurry and not dally too long in
any one particular place or it’s not
possible to make it to all of them
before it ends at 8 p.m.
My companion and co-author of
this column this week is my friend
Shirley Fischer. We both took notes
at each place and she’s helping me
w rite about the restaurants. We are
food gluttons and proud of it. We
love to eat. We often joke that one
of our favorite food groups is
“gravy.” We’ve added some of our
own additional groups to the list of
recommended food groups, such as
the chocolate group, the gravy/rich
sauces group, the anything barbe-
cued group and our favorite food
group -melted cheese! And, we
found all our favorites as we trav-
eled around town dining.
At the 5 p.m. start, we began our
ctdinary journey at the busy corner
of Beach and Station Streets where
we parked and walked to four res-
taurants and two shops, all located
on the same corner. At each place
there was a line of people waiting
to get in. hut they all moved along
quickly. Shirley and 1 started at The
Beach and Station Street Grill and
on her note pad she wrote, “Gumhiv
nice and spicy w ith shrimp, fish, and
sausage, over rice. Good!”
Then across the street we wan-
dered to the
Crazy Cajun. 1
wrote in my
notebook, “suc-
culent tender
pieces of baby
hack ribs, a
menu favorite”
and Shirley
wrote, “Fall off
the bone tender.
One of my fa-
On the town
vorites at the SHARON SunAI-'LR
Cajun for many
years.” We dipped them in barbecue
sauce and munched on these for
awhile then maiie oui way lo the
Venetian I lot Plate Restaurant on
tile other corner, i hey were serving
delicious penne pasta tossed with
sweet fennel and Italian sausage in a
creamy Romano cheese sauce. This
dish along with what they were serv-
ing next door, satisfied our appetites
for that favorite food group of ours,
melted cheese.
Across the parking lot at the La
Playa Mexican Grille, they offered
yummy chicken and beef nachos
topped with melted quest) along w ith
bow Is of sliced jalapenos and flavor-
ful homemade salsas. Then we en-
joyed some chocolate covered straw-
berries, a bacon and eggs dessert, and
other yummy treats at participating
shops nearby.
Next, we got hack into the car and
drove a few blocks to Pelican’s Land-
ing Restaurant. Shirley noted “two
of their best recipes, melt-in-your-
mouth blue crab cakes w ith jalapeno
tartar sauce and savory chicken curry
— both scrumptious” as we joined the
line on their tropical outdoor deck.
By then we were running into people
we met previously at other places and
enjoyed visiting again. We ventured
off to Trout Street Bar N. Grill and
relished one of their specialties, a
seafood C reole loaded with scallops,
shrimp and crab that was served over
rice. Our taste of island cuisine con-
tinued when we stopped at the Is-
lam! C ale. I hey were serving one of
their popular menu items, crispy
fried fish with red cocktail sauce,
creamy tartar sauce and lemons.
While there, we met two people who
were doing the Dine Around, on
their bicycles. This was their second
year in a row and they loved it.
Off Cotter Street and onto Cut-
off Road, we headed to the Wharf
Restaurant. As we chatted with
some Winter Texans who were leav-
ing, Shirley wrote, “Mr. Weber from
Nebraska said it was the best shrimp
salad he’d ever had --wonderful!” We
traveled on to the next place on our
list, Jay’s Seafood and Spaghetti
Works. These nice folks were serv-
ing cups of their famous tortilla soup
and samples of their best desserts.
Their fudge cake recipe fits into that
favorite food group of mine, the
chocolate group.
We barely made it to Shell’s Pasta
and Seafood on the corner of Av-
enue G and 11th Street but were
happy we arrived just before the
clock chimed 8. We ended our jour-
ney around town with plates of their
flavorful Caesar salad tossed with
Canadian bacon and samples of
homemade strawberry custard
truffle with whipped cream.
We were stuffed! Everyone we
saw said how good the food was
everywhere including at the shops
and clubs. Everyone was smiling and
had a great time.
Thanks for helping take notes,
Shirley!
Enjoy your meal!

Yes, I really meant “Bacon and
Eggs” dessert above. Sally Marco at
her Gratitude Shop, served these
cute little treats and shared the
simple recipe with us.
Bacon & Eoos
Microwave some almond hark
until it’s barely workable. Not too
hot, just pliable. Almond hark is an
ivory creamy white color. On a flat
surface, hold two straight pretzels
together and put a dollop of almond
hark in the middle of the two pret-
zels. It sticks them together making
them easy to pick up. Place a yellow
M&M in the center of the almond
hark dollop.
That’s it. Picture it, it looks like a
yellow egg on two pieces of bacon,
the pretzels. Place on a platter and
serve.
