Scott Holt to discuss
vocalizations of fish
Scott Holt will tell about fishes
making noise tonight (Thursday,
Feb. 12) in the University of Texas
Marine Science Institute (UTMSI)
evening lecture series.
The lectures, which begin at 7 p.m.
at the Visitor Center auditorium, are
open to the puhlir free of rharoe
Contrary to popular belief, the
ocean is not a silent world, Holt said.
Formal title of Holt’s talk is “Songs
of the Fishes: How scientists use
sounds produced by fish to study
their biology”.
Many people are familiar with
sounds produced by whales, but
many other kinds of marine crea-
tures produce sounds as well, Holt
said.
“Many species of fish are quite
vocal and those vocalizations are
produced in a variety of contexts,
but we know relatively little about
flip voral rpnprfnirp of mnet «ru»ripc
a i
or the specific functions of the calls,”
Holt said.
Several groups of fish, including
drum, cod and damselfish, have dis-
tinctive vocalizations that are clearly
related to reproductive activities.
“In this presentation, 1 will pro-
vide a brief review of some physical
aspects of sound relevant to fish
studies, discuss some aspects ol
sound production and reception by
fishes and present some results of
our work with red drum in the west
ern Gulf of Mexico,” he said.
The presentation will include a
camnlintT nf fK*» Cl'Urt^hip SOlirJll1
produced by these fish.
Matt Palmtag will speak on “Fire
Shrimp: Marine ornamental inver-
tebrates, can we raise them in cap-
tivity instead of taking them from
the wild?” at the lecture on Feb. 19.

749-6741.
‘Hazards of Deadlines* is talk topic
Staff photo by Murray Juoson
Carolyn Richards, reporter at the
South Jetty, will speak on “The Haz-
ards of Deadlines” Tuesday as part
of the Windows on Wisdom and Wit
lecture series.
Sponsored by the Port Aransas
Parks and Recreation Department,
the free lecture will be at 7 p.m. at
the Community Center, corner
Alister and Oaks streets.
Richards will recount her adven-
tures and misadventures with dead-
lines from the beginning of her ca-
reer through today.
A native Texan who lived many
years in California, Richards and her
late husband moved here in 1992
when they retired. Soon after arriv-
ing here, she started to work at the
South Jetty.
She said that more than 70 years
ago she read a comic strip, titled
“Brenda Starr, Girl Reporter,” and
it changed her life. She never wanted
to be anything but a reporter — or
maybe a movie star — in her younger
years.
Before she could follow her love
of journalism, she married and had
a family. It wasn’t until Nov. 22,
1963, the day President John F.
Kennedy was assassinated, that she
started working for a newspaper. By
that time she was “Carolyn Richards,
Woman Reporter.”
She divides her time today be-
tween her part-time job as a reporter,
being a great-grandmother, a Pres-
byterian church worker, and doing
anything she can do on stage with
the Port Aransas Community The-
ater.

the Parks and Recreation Depart-
ment at 749-4158.
Gumbo supper is slated
Feb. 20 by Kiwanis Club
A seafood and sausage gumbo
supper with music by fiddler Leslie
Willey Sr. will be held Feb. 20 by the
Port Aransas Kiwanis Club.
Serving begins at 5:30 p.m. at the
Community Center on Alister
Street.
Tickets are $9 per person from
any Kiwanis member, Tootie Barnes
at American Bank, Susan Harkness
at ValueBank Texas or at the door.
“If you enjoyed the Potato Bake,
then don’t miss its sequel: the Sea
food and Sausage Gumbo,” said
Betsy Churgai. “We’ve introduced
this event because so many people
commented positively on the Potato
Bake!” she said.
Tickets cover gumbo, salad, home-
made desserts and coffee or tea.
Cups and ice will be provided for
those who bring their own bever-
ages. Take-out plates will be available
at no additional charge.
In addition to the food and mu-
sic, a cash raffle will be held. Pro-
ceeds from the raffle and ticket
sales will be used for club projects
such as scholarships for Port
Aransas High School seniors, spon-
sorship of the Latchkey program,
the Boy and Girl Scouts, and the
recently-formed 4-H Club; provid-
ing food at community events such
as the beach cleanups, Sunset
Sounds, and SandFest; and food
baskets and clothing packages for
less fortunate residents at special
times of the year.
“We appreciate your participation
that enables this active civic organi-
zation to continue to provide many
much needed services for a variety
of causes," said Suzanna Reeder,
Kiwanis Club president. Churgai at 749-4152 or (361) 779-
