Sales tax reports November strong
By Beki Desopo
South Jetty reporter
November marked a fresh star)
for sales tax figures. Port Aransas
began the fiscal year on a good note,
compared to 2001.
The taxes were collected in No-
vember and reported to State
Comptroller Carol Keeton
Strayhorn in December.
The rebate sent to the City of Port
Aransas was up by 8.95 percent
compared to the same time last year.
All year to-date numbers will match
the monthly numbers since this is
the first month.
In November 2001, the city de-
posited $42,425.85 earned from
sales tax rebates. This year, the fig-
ure increased to $46,224.99.
Numbers looked good for the
Coastal Bend. Corpus Christi re-
ported an increase of 7.8 percent
for November and the year.
Aransas Pass chalked up an in-
crease of 18.84 percent for the pe-
riod.
Ingleside reported an 18.07 per-
cent increase in its rebate for the
period.
Rockport logged a 3.7 percent
increase in its rebate for November.
Elsewhere the numbers were
down slightly. On the northern
Texas coast, Galveston showed a
1.79 percent decrease in its Novem-
ber rebate.
South Padre Island went from a
129.17 percent increase in October
to a drop of 9.55 percent for No-
vember. Access to the island, some-
thing visitors did not have in 2001,
was the major reason for the Octo-
ber increase. Numbers have since
leveled off. On Sept. 15, 2001, the
island resort community was cut off
from the mainland when a barge
struck a piling tin the Queen Isabella
Causeway that connects South Pa-
dre Island to the mainland. Trans-
portation to and from the island
from then until December was by
two ferryboats from the Port
Aransas ferry system.
San Antonio, home to many part-
time Port Aransas residents and
property owners, saw a dip in No-
vember rebates of 2.88 percent.
Rebates from December sales, the
last month in the reporting period,
are due by late January and will be
reported on February 14.
