aged to consider this opportunity to
help deserving youth be successful
and reach their potential,” said
Cathy Abernethy, elementary and
middle school counselor.
More mentors are needed, she
added.
Mentoring is a one-on-one relation-
ship between a caring adult and a
student who welcomes such support,
Abernethy explained.
The mentoring relationship is vol-
untary on the part of the student as
well as the mentor.
Mentors are matched with their
gender and may choose the educa-
tional level of their mentee.
They meet once a week for an
hour with the student on school
grounds at a time agreed to by the
mentor, student and student’s
teacher.
Activities during the hour are flex-
ible ami can encompass the interests
of the child and skills of the mentor.
Mentors are not tutors, Abernethy
said.
At the training session, new men-
tors will he asked to complete appli-
cations for standard screening. They
will then be matched with a recom-
mended student.
Those who are interested in be-
ing mentors but who cannot attend
the meeting are asked to call
Abernethy at 7494200, extension
330.

bers are invited to open houses at
