Missy Gilbreath and Logan Taylor, third graders at H.G. Olsen Elementary School, helped decorate
the Christmas tree in the school’s foyer on Monday morning. The students were helping Raul
Mendoza, whose arm is visible, to adjust and steady the tree before the decorations were put on it.
Mendoza is a special education aide.

Blessings of the season
Once again it is my turn to inform
and entertain the wonderful folks
who read this paper. As you read
this article, we have finished the
Thanksgiving holidays and have
plunged headfirst into the Christ-
mas season. I think I have now re-
covered from spending approxi-
mately 20 hours in the car with a 5-
and 6-year-old over the Thanksgiv-
ing break, but that’s another story!
1 cannot believe that I have now
lived in Port Aransas for four
months! Two six-week periods have
now passed at school and I love the
town and school more and more. I
hope that you can stand one more
“I’m thankful for...” list as we enjoy
this wonderful holiday season.
The Olsen Elementary Principal’s
List of Thanksgivings
I am thankful for...
• Teachers who go above and be-
yond the call to not only make sure
that their students master the cur-
riculum and pass standardized tests,
but also coach UIL and other activi-
ties to enhance student learning. Our
teachers make learning interesting
and fun so that their students will
want to be lifelong learners.
• Students who work very hard
to master their studies while still en-
joying themselves and being caring
and compassionate to those around
them. Thank you students for invit-
ing me to your room to show me
your projects, to sing to me, have
lunch with me, and show concern
when I had laryngitis.
• Parents who go out of their way
to help when asked. Thanks for all
your work at the Fall Festival and
Thanksgiving feasts. Thanks for
helping in the office and classrooms,
and all the other “stuff” you’ve done.
Thank you for being supportive and
willing to help.

dents, parents, community and any-
one else who
asks. (She needs
special thanks!
It’s not easy put-
ting up with me
on a daily basis!)
• Instruc-
tional aides who
never complain
when they are
asked to do a
myriad of duties
and perform
them well.
• The mainte-
nance and custo-
dial staff that
keeps the school clean and keeps
everything functioning properly. We
couldn’t make it without you guys!
• The transportation staff that
gets our most precious cargo to
school and back home safely on a
daily basis.
• Volunteers who help out on a
daily basis when they could be do-
ing a host of other things.
• The superintendent and his
staff for making the principal’s job
easier.
• The School Board for taking a
position that is very important and
at times very stressful—without pay!
• And last, but certainly not least,
the community for your support and
encouragement! We appreciate you!
On a personal note, 1 am thank-
ful for my parents who are always
supportive of me, my wonderful sons
who have brought me great joy and
my new friends in Port Aransas who
have made my transition to a new
town much easier.
Now for a bit of school news. The
students who participate in UIL ac-
tivities went to contest on Dec. 4
and 6. As I submit the article, I do
not have the results of the contests,
hut 1 feel that the students did well

because I have witnessed the hard
work put forth by both the students
and their teachers.
The third, fourth and fifth grade
students recently completed the first
of three practice TAKS tests. These
tests are benchmark tests. The pur-
pose of these tests is to find out if
the students have mastered the ob-
jectives that have been taught up to
this point in the year. The teachers
will use this information to fine-tune
their curriculum to ensure they have
taught the objectives tested by the
TAKS tests and that their students
have mastered those objectives.
As we enter the Christmas sea-
son and the close of 2003, 1 hope
that each one of 11s will stop and
reflect on the many blessings we’ve
had this year. 1 hope that each one
of you has a blessed holiday season
and that you take time from your
busy schedule to remember the real
reason we celebrate Christmas.
Merry Christmas! uveryond!'

In about three hours, group
members picked up fishing cord,
medical waste and barrels and
managed to fill about 80 trash
