(Seamen "strikers" who are considered to be capable of per-
forming the duties of a petty officer, third class, in the rating for
which they have been studying, will be given an additional Rat-
ing Description covering that rating.)
A SEAMAN, First Class, performs a number of routine duties
connected with anchoring, mooring, or docking the vessel, such
as taking soundings with a lead line, handling mooring lines,
rigging a gangplank, and handling anchor chains. He performs
various maintenance duties such as meaning the anchor wind-
lass and winches; removing old paint from decks, bulwarks,
ladders, etc.; splicing lines; swabbing decks; and polishing
bright-work. During battle or emergency drills, such as fire or
collision, he may be assigned to special duties as a member of a
gun crew, ammunition passing detail, repair or fire fighting party,
or as an operator of a piece of equipment. In performing his
duties he receives close supervision from a petty officer.
111. DUTIES PERFORMED (Representative duties performed by
a SEAMAN, First Class.)
(1) Stands anchor and speed indicator watches; acts as look-
out, steersman, messenger. (2) Acts as telephone talker, both
on watch and at special drills, relaying reports and information
