DEMOCRATS SWEEP STATE
Nebraskas Legislature Is Over-
whelmingly That Way
Lincoln Nov 5 Complete returns
from a third of the counties and scat-
tering ones from moat of the re-
mainder show that Bryan will have a
plurality of not less than 10000 and
that Shallenburger Democratic candi-
date for governor and the balance of
the Democratic ticket will have hardly
1000 less
But the Democratic victory does not
stop there At least four or probably
five of Nebraskas six congressmen
are Democratic officially one Repub-
lican Hinshaw of the Foutr district
being assured of escaping defeat
Ther Is a close fight In the fifth dis-
trict between Norris Republican and
Ashton Democrat with the chances
favoring the Democrat
The greatest surprise of all Is the
overwhelming majority of the Demo-
crats in the legislature Of the 133
senators and representatives elected
the canvassers of returns Wednesday
night could find but eighteen Republic-
ans who had won The Republican
committee concedes the Democrats
will control both houses
RESULT IN NEBRASKA
W J Bryan Expresses Himself as Be-
ing Greatly Pleased
Lincoln Neb Nov 5 While not
caring to discuss at this time the pr >
litical effect of the Democratic victory
in his home state or analyze the cause
William J Bryan in an inofrmal talk
to a number of friends who called on
him expressed his pleasure at the re-
sult in Nebraska and the satisfaction
it afforded him to learn of the election
of so many of his political and person-
al friends
A delegation numbering nearly 100
from Lincoln visited Mr Bryan at Fiar
vlew to express to him their confi-
dence and devotion to him and to as-
sure him that such was the sentiment
of a majority of the people of his city
and state Mr Bryan in responding
said
I am highly gratified over the re
sults in this ssate The national de
feat has not been such a disappoint-
ment as we have had so many things
to console us I hope I have convinc
ed my friends that running for office
has only been an incident to my work
My heait has never been set on hold
ing office but I wanted to do certain
work and it looked as though the pres
idency might offer the opportunity to
do
work I am sure that in pri-
vate life I can have the chance to do
something One is not required to
hold office in order to do big things
One is simply required to do those
things within his reach and that much
is within the reach of us
Personally I shall find as much joy
being out of office if the returns show
I must be as I would be In office I
hope still to be of influence to bring
about needed reforms I appreciate
very much the confidence of the peo-
ple near us It has been the greatest
comfort that the election has given us
The fact that those among whom we
live have shown this confidence we ap-
preciate more than I can tell you
It has been very kind in you to come
out here and visit with us on this
dayThe
The defeat he sustained Tuesday did
not weigh heavily on Mr Bryan He
was one of tne most cheerful of those
at his home and laughed and joked
goodnaturedly with his visitors
Wednesday night Mr Bryan was the
honor guest at the banquet of the
State Teachers association where he
made a short address He has bo
other immediate plans than to rest
at home following his canvass
Decided Change
Indianapolis Nov 5 A radical
change In Indianas representation in
the national house of representatives
was the most striking feature of the
election The latest unofficial returns
complete give the Democratic party
eleven members and the Republicans
two This Is a gain of seven mem-
bers for the Democrats the former
representation being nine Republicans
and four Democrats
William H Taft carried the state
for president according to Incomplete
returns by about 8000 Thomas R
Marshall Democratic candidate for
governor and the entire Democratic
ticket are probably elected by a plu-
rality around 16000 As the returns
come in Marshalls plurality Increases
while the vote on the Republican na-
tional ticket decreases
The legislature is probably Demo-
cratic which means that a successor
to Senator Hemenway will be chosen
In this connection the name of John
W Kern is mentioned

Democrats of Colorado Elected
Candidate For Governor
Denver Nov 5 Estimated plurali-
ties by countiesfi based on incomplete
returns show that Bryan and the en-
tire Democratic state ticket headed
by John F Shafroth for governor car-
ried Colorado with pluralities In the
neighborhood of 5000 The Democrats
probably will control the legislature
JOHN F
SHAFROTH
by a narrow margin insuring the elec-
tion of Charles J Hughes Jr as
United States senator to succeed Tell-
er Hughes has been endorsed for the
position by the state convention
ELECTION AFTERMATH
Figures Compiled From Practically
Complete Returns
New York Nov 5 From practically
complete returns indications are that
William H Taft will have a vote of
309 and it may reach 327 if Missomi
goes for Taft in the electoral college
This is within sixteen votes of the
forecast made by National Chairman
Frank H Hitchcock and sixtyseven
more than a majority out of the total
electoral vote of 4S5 in the event Bry-
an carries Missouri
Maryland after vacillating and be
ing apparently safe for Democracy
has beeu swung Into the Taft column
by 186 votes Maryland was the last
of the doubtful states to be heard from
Indiana and West Virginia as well as
Montana turned out to be safely Re-
publican Colorado went for Bryan
Mr Bryan has a total of 156 votes
with Missouri in dispute In 1904 Mr
Parker received only 146 votes and
in 1900 Mr Bryan received 155 votes
and in 190G the Nebraskan received
186 votes
Mr Roosevelt received 336 in 1904
McKinley received 292 In 1900 and 271
in 1896
No changes of material Interest have
been reported in the congressional re-
turns The Republicans will have the
same working majority in the Sixty
first congress as at present ard Jo-
seph G Cannon of Illinois undoubtedly
will succeed himself as speaker Rep-
resentatives Jesse Overstreet of Indi-
ana and Hepburn of Iowa are the most
conspicuous of those who have failed
for reelection
The senate retains its Republican
complexion although there will be a
material change in the personnel of the
upper body of the national legislature
All the rest of the states are safely
for Taft with the exception of Mary
land and Missouri where the issue la
bo close that an official count will
finally determine the result
Indications are that in the national
house Of representatives the Republic-
ans will have 208 members and the
Democrats 172 Eleven districts are
doubtful

Presidents Interpretation
Washington Nov 4 President
Roosevelt gave an interpretation of
the victory of the Republican party at
the polls when he said to newspaper-
men whom be received in his office
The demonstration meant the
steady effort and progress which will
never be allowed to deviate Into un-
wise radicalism on the one hand nor
Into unwise conservatism on the oth-
er The nomination of Taft was a
triumph over reactionary conserva-
tism and his election a triumph over
unwise and improper radicalism
