the saloon gang will furnish the

on the election of July 23nd It
looks pretty bad for a man who
claims to know so much about

G I TODD IN CALIFORNIA
Oakland Cal July 4 6 p m
Dear Jimplecute
As the 4th of July has ended
and we have had quite a strenu-
ous day and as I have written
nothing since we struck the Pa
cific ocean at Los Angeles I
thought Iwould send your read-
ers a short sketch in the time
before we go to supper
We reached Los Angeles
thus finishing the run across
the continent at 630 a m June
23rd In the fine Union depot
there of the Southern Pacific
breakfast sliced
we got our
oranges jandJhalibutJish at a rea-
sonable price and at 7 p m
took the daylight train to Go-
shen Junction about half way to
San Francisco running on the
line the San Jua
through
quin Valley We ascended moun-
tains and penetrated 40 or 50
tunnels getting to an elevation of
4000 feet above the sea At
that elevation at a place called
Mohvae we took lunch and got a
slice of splendid apple pie with
iced sweet milk We reached
Goshen at 8 and Coalinga1at 10 p
m whence we met Vandyke
ready to receive us I was pret
ty much exasted but stood the
long trip better than I thought
I could
We remained 10 days at Coal
inga a fine new city of 6000 peo-
ple We were most hospitably
received and treated were given
three fine rides autos through
the oil fields which are said to be
the largest in the world larger
than those at Bakersfield
which we also saw in passing on
the train There are four pipe
lines through the coast range
of Sierras to the ocean besides
the railroad to San Francisco
to handle the vast output of oil
We enjoyed a comparatively
cool atmosphere sometimes the
ocean winds a little for 10 days
On yesterday we came with Van-
dyke and his wife to the end of
our ticket trip and I have ha d
to wear my overcoat ever since
reaching here yesterday evening
Today in the glorious cli
mate of California everybody
has been celebrating the glori
ous Fourth and nothing else
has been doing We crossed the
bay at 9 a m and went up Mar
ket and Haight Streets to Gol-
den Gate Park where they say
the Worlds Exposition will be
located in 1915
It is the largest and most mag
nificent place I was ever in and
tho I soon gave out physically
yet reclining in sheltered and
sequestered nooks and watching
50000 people with lunches bas-
kets childrens play grounds
swings merrygorounds etc
and getting a fine cup of coffee
and sandwich we enjoyed the
day returning at 4 p m back to
a comfortable room though
quite cool and wearing my over-
coat of course we have no fire
but I would like to
I think we will D V spend
week here sightseeing and then
goto Mt Hermon Big Trees
and Santa Cruz
I hope to get back home not
cured but improved by some-
time in August My bronchial
affection and shortwinded as-
thmatic condition still wories me
in high altitudes as well as here
on the ocean otherwise I am
stronger and enjoy the ocean
breeze much If I cant get rid
of my asthma I may be home
sooner Love to everybody

In returning we hope to stop
at Yosemite Park Los Angeles

Towns nd Their Papers
A newspaper can never very
creditably represent a town
whose business men do not ad-
vertise He may howl himself
hoarse bragging about the vim
energy and enterprise of his
town but if his declarations are
not backed up by a liberalamount
of advertising by the business-
men of the town the world will
be slow to take his statement as
true It takes more than the
unsupported testimonial of the
local newspaper man toVprove
to the world that histown is the
best on the market and the best
place on earth lo buy goods His
evidence eeds eorrbboration
Toyah Valley Herald
State Press whp sees a small
mountain of
newspapers every
week is downright sorry for the
conrageous souls who edit them
a few of them These papers
appear weekly with well written
editorials and snappy paragraphs
boosting their respective towns
and each telling what a thriving
promising little city it is pub-
lished in A glance at the ad-
vertising pages or the pages
where advertisements ought to
be shows that the space is given
over to plate matter or miscel-
laneous reprint and that most
of the merchants are dead or
asleep Now this much is cer-
tain and does not admit of con-
troversy Every good town
maitains a good newspaper and
the appearance of the newspaper
indicates its condition If the
paper looks half starved grant
ing of course that it is the rep-
resentative paper of the commu-
nity then the town is full of
tightwads and a town full of
tightwads is a town full of the
kind of people who will never do
anything to improve their condi-
tion except to squeeze usurious
interest out of needy borrowers
This is an advertising age the
age of printers ink and mer-
chants who havent found that
out are ordinarily not keen
