ments to get the election returns by
wire on Saturday night and will flash
the bulletins on the building in front
of the Herald office Efforts will be
made to give a good service and it
the returns can be secured as fully
as they should he we should be able
to tell the people of this city how the
vote has gone in a few hours after
voting ceases All of the people of the

president of the Monon Railroad andj grand jury today returned an indict
one of the best known railroad men in ment charging crimnal libel against
the country was shot and killed by 1 Governor B P Carroll The indict
burglars in his home in Winetka a ment grows out of the removal of

The discovery of blood stains on
the sidewalk in front of the house and
the fact that one shot had been fired
from Rawns revolver lead the police
to believe that the burglar was
wounded Mrs Rawn says shei heard
two pistol shots and thinks her hus-
band fired at the intruder before he
was shot All of the Monon shops
and ticket offices have been instruct-
ed to place the flags at half mast
A posse has been organized at Win
etka and is rounding up a number of
suspects The police declare that the
murderer is probably a negro The
suburb where the murder took place
has been terrorized for some time by
negro toughs Women have been in-
sulted and there have been numer
ous burglaries Rawn is survived by
his wife and three daughters Judge
E C Field vice president of the
Monon road will act as temporary
successor to Rawn until an election
is held Rawn was formerly with the
Illinois Central as vice president

With the Bucks Stove Company
Ratified Today

St Louis Mo July 20 The settle-
ment of the long standing fight be-
tween the Bucks Stove company and
the American Federation of Labor is
hailed as a great victory for labor by
the labor forces here The board of
directors of the stove company called
a meeting this morning to ratify the
agreement reached yesterday in Cin
cinnati
The agieement unionizing the
Bucks plants does not effect the con
tempt proceedings against Gompers
Morrison and Mitchell pending he
fore the United States supreme court
The stove company attorneys how-
ever will withdraw from the case

Joe Cannon arrived here this morn-
ing en route to his home in Danville
111 where he expects to rest follow-
ing his campaign through Kansas He
said he believed his campaign had
done good and that Miller Campbell
Reed Calderhead and Anthony will
be elected It was a mild meek
czar that enteredKansas He took
back wanting the insurgents shot but
instead only wanted them ostracised
lie says he did not say he wanted
them shot but said if it was war
tmes they would be shot But this
is peace He characterizes the insur-
gents as gorillas in the political war-
fare waging war on both sides He
says they gave aid to the democrats
and yet the democrats hate them He
said that no one likes a traitor If
these insurgents wanted to change
their political affiliation why didnt
they do like Eugene Foss of Massa-
chusetts he asks He assailed the in-
surgents in their action on the tariff
bill and declared that though he had
been misquoted he had told the Kan-
sans the truth
