You can waste money on shoes aB
quickly as on anything else perhaps
more so for what looks like leather
often proves a horse of another
color For this very reason Cooke is
overly parUcular about bis shoes
Above all else sound and solid leather
must enter into the making of overy
pair Sightliness comfort and a per-
fect tit are other characteristics of
Cookes shoos If its shoes see Cooke

Thero is absolutely no logic in the
maxim that All things come to him

erally gets them Tliat is why I am

DEPARTMENT PLAN
Continued From Page 2
work ho ceases to give trouble and if
ho were under tho care each day of
four or five different teachers each
teaching jast tho thing she was fond
est of with enthusiasm there would
be a spiritual awakening and a lovo
for truth right thinking and right act-
ing on the part of the pupil And this
is tho true ond of education
The grading and promotion of pupils
would be moro saUsfactory to teach-
ers pupils and patrons No teacher
could complain that the work of tho
previous year had not been well done
for that would bo her own work All
teachers would be of equal rank and
each wonld proparo her pupils as care-
fully as possible for the next years
work because she would Instruct them
in the same branch tho next year
There is one class of teachers who
will oppose this plan thoso who fear
competition All who are weak In any-
way as teachers would either have to
improve their work or seek other
employment for it would be easy for
tho pupil to estimate tho rolative abili-
ties of the different teachers who In-
structed him each day and no outside
influence could long keep a weak
teacher In a department school Noth
ingut actual success in toaching could
do f 6 Nothing entitles a teacher to a
placa in tho school but real success
In teaching not oven the highest
scholarship But If as sometimes
happens a good teacher has a sort of
stunning or benumbling effect upon a
peculiarly constituted pupil one or
two years work will not bo entirely
lost to that pupil but he will bo
strengthened in at least all branches
taught by other teachers
Where will so many specialists bo
found for this work From tho worthy
teachers who are now in the schools
Every real teacher would bo glad to
specialize aud become skilled in her
work for she knows that if she at-
tempts to teach overything sbo fails to
do anything really well
The teacher would be hotter paid bo
cause tho people would realize that
they were getting the worth of their
money Teachers sometimes say I
do not teach drawing or writing I do
not know how I simply give tho
pupil the book and say Draw or
Write That Is only wasting tho
time of the pupil and people cannot
bo expected to pay for that Wilm-
ington Delaware pays one of its draw-
ing teachers 91500 a year Ho had
not even a high school education
While he was at work in the railroad
maohine shops the people saw that ho
could do one tiling well and their chil
dren went to him for lessons in draw-
ing until they thought it better to give
him a good salary to teach that one
thing in their schools
In teaching as In every other branch
of endeavor ho accomplishes most
who concentrates his onorgies Tho
great teacher did not attempt to teach
everything His greatest pupil him-
self a great teacher said This one
thing I do Every man who ever did
anything great was a man of con-
centrated energies
Tho man who sooks one thing in life
and but one
May hopo to attain it before life be
done
But he who seeks all things wherever
ho goes
Only reaps from tho hopes which
around him he sows
A harvest of barren regrets
But how can tho tcachor seek one
thing and but one if she is required
to teach everything If the teacher
grWW l
T SK
were given one or two subjects to
teach in four or flvo different grades
it would bo much better for teacher
and pupil The teacher would approach
the recitation with fresh knowledge
and enthusiasm overy day tho pupils
would bo directed with superior skill
and would accomplish a great deal
moro and with pleasure
As tho teacher specializes the pupil
will broaden and a few generations of
tho department plan under earnest
sympathetic workers would give us
the best schools and the grandest men
and women the world has ever known
Tho Great Teacher taught only
religion and its rewards and His words
wero tho words of eternal life
