GOOD ROADS
It is barely possible that a great
many of our people have not
realized tho importance attached
to the good roads meeting in Pal
estine the 13th and 14th of De
cember To the citizen who has a
pride in his town tho mere fact
that there will be a convention of
some five or six hundred delegates
to meet here would arouse his in-
terest and cause him to want
to see the city presented in her
best light to her visitors whether
he felt an interest in the cause for
which they met or not The del-
egates will be here That is a
settled fact And they will bo
entertained This is a most im-
portant movement so recognized
by progressive citizens all over the
state and many of the citizens
will be here to endorse tho work
and assist in advancing it
Let Palestine and Anderson
county do their part
If Palestine had more enter-
prises like her packery she would
be a better town in many ways
Carnival companies are playing
towns all over Texas There are
several companies in the state
Bryan says the democratic
party is all right if kept in the
hands ot its friends which the
faithful should see is done in the
future
Most of the imported toys com-
ing into this country now come
through the ports of Galveston
and New Orleans A few years
ago nearly all shipments were to
northern ports
In addition to putting menoy
j into boring for oil the Herald
would like to sec some of our cap-
italists organize into commercial
orchard companies We believe
fortunes are to be made here on
top of the ground
The country at large is now
assured that tho tariff is in the
hands of its friends No doubt
about that It Is impressed upon
us every time we spend a dollar
for clothing orprovisions
It looks now as if the war be-
tween Russia and Japan is to re-
sult in a great blessing to one of
the greatest nations on earth
Taking advantage of the condi-
tion of the Czar tho great mid-
dle class of Russia is demanding
a constitutional form of govern-
ment and it looks as if they will
largely accomplish their purpose
Is they even make a substantial
beginning to an ultimate end of
this kind the gain in blessing to T

Make a Friend of the Ed-
itor
Every man In ovory town during
the course of a lifetime has to ask a
favor of the editor not an exception
to this rule says the Hiawatha Kan
World A man may escape a doctor
keep clear of the courts bat onco in a
lifetime at least every man has to go
to a newspaper to ask a certain piece
put in a death notice a marriage no
tice etc to have a certain piece kept
out or to have his name printed in or
omitted from some item It is there
fore to your interest to treat tho ed
itor fairly He desires to be fair he
would rather do tho right thing than
the wrong thing but if you give him
a kick the dont of it may bo found in
the top of your own hat same day
and you will never know how it got
there Dont think that you are im-
mune dont think that providence has
especially favored you Your time
will come and when it does come it
will be a fine investment if you bavo a

They Are Coming v
Mr R R Claridge the hustling real
estate man says that from sow until
after the holidays there will be a lull in
tho arrival of investors and homo
seokers but that a great rush will set
in after tho holidays j
Mr Olaridgo is of tho opinion
that with a littlo intelligent offort An
dcrson county can bo filled up with a
very desirable class of cltizons Ho
sayti what they shy at most is our un
cleared unimproved brnsby landu
Mr Claridge suggests an idea that
might bo followed with profit by our
land owners those who are able to
expend a few dollars on improve-
ments He says you can scarcely in-
terest one of the north or northwest
fellows in unimproved lands even at a
small pribo but improved property
a tract of land with even a small house
and a few acres cleared and under
fence will sell readily at a handsome
price Ho says tho homeseekers are
looking for homes to move into and
land cleared upon which they can go
to growing something
Now tho idea presents itself Why
could not owners of large tracts Im-
prove a few acres build a neat cot-
tage etc and sell to these investors
It would bring the rest of tho tract In-
to tho market and ultimately result in
improving the whole
