WHAT CARVER SAYS
Depends on Whether Reynolds Holds
Securities to Amount Certified
New York D < c 7 Attorney Carvor
counsel Tor Herbert D Newton of
Brookllne Mass Is quoted as having
said that if President Beckwith tha
Oberlln O banker believed the New-
ton loan to Mrs Cnssle Chadwick was
based on the socalled missing 500
000 note he is mistaken When New-
ton loaned the money the attorney
said he had no security whatever ex-
cept her personal note The money
was loaned In small amounts until
finally new notes were given to cover
the total amount loaned Newton was
shown a note for 500000 but I de-
cline to say whose name appearedon
It He was also shown a certificate
signed by Ira Reynolds to the eltert
th > re were 5000000 worth of securl
ties belonging to Mrs Chadwicl
When I was brought Into the case tha
first thing I did after a long confer
ence at New York with Mrs Chad
wicl was to obtain the assignment of
securities supposed lo be held by Ifc jr
noMs Further developments depjnil
on whether Reynolds actually iioTds
securities to the amount he certified
It Is lrarncd that Mrs Chadwick
summoned to her apartments Itte
Monday night counsel representing
Newton and also her own counsel
They participated In a confeien
which lasted until after midnight
The woman In said to have talked at
considerable length on the turn of af-
fairs In Oberllij and Cleveland but the
result was not made public

Interests Involved in the case which
becomes the more surprising with
every new revelation That President
Beckwlths statement brings to light
new and Important phases of the case
and also much nearer the Inevitable
uncovering of thc entire affair is the
belief of a majority of the attorneys

DESIRE SETTLEMENT
Creditors Prefer This to Precipitating
a Sensational Crisis
New York Dec 3 That the credit-
ors of Mrs Cassle LCadwck are
more anxious to bring about a settle
nwnt of their claims against the wom-
an than precipitate a crisis by sensa-
tional legal steps Is believed by Mrs
Chadwlcks local attorneys They think
this Ins been shown by the many con
ferences Tuesday without apparent re
sult It Is pointed out also that no
other than the hope that It Is not yet
i too late to secure a cash settlement
of claims against Mrs Chadwick ex-
plains the delay In submitting to An
drew Carnegie the notes held by the
Oberlln bank for his decision as to
whether the signature is genuine
Attorney Andrew Squire counsel for
Treasurer Irl Reynolds of the Wade
Park bank of Cleveland Is quoted aa
saying I am In this city representing
several creditors All that I am look-
ing for Is cash It Is Intimated that
the purpose of Mr Reynolds trip to
New York was at the request of Mrs
Chadwick li an endeavor to raise funds
on the Chadwick securities said to be
worth 7000000 of which he Is said to
bo trustee
Despite the frequent conferences In
this city Tuesday and the sudden re-
moval of rs Chadwick to another
hotel which was emphasized by the
fact that she is watched by two secret
service officers who promptly followed
and occupied rooms near her quarters
shows decided action In the case seems
to be held li abeyance by some power-
ful Influence it Is reported the delay
was In a measure due to a desire in
prevent Imposition of a hardship upon
the banks with which Mrs Chadwick
has had dealings but whose part in her
financial affairs has not yet been made
puhjlc It Is said that If It was known
other banks had made loans to Mrs
Chadwick a run on them might be
started that would do them great In-
Jury No one not Intimately connected
with the case knows what these banks
are nor what has become of ho note
for J200000 which President Beckwith
of thc Oberlln bank says he Indorsed
for Mrs Chadwick There was some
Intimation that local authorities a
Cleveland might step Into the case and
bring the case to an Issue by asserting
officially whether the disputed notes
