A SOLDIER WRITES
B T Ward Writes About Army
Life In California
Special Correspondence
San Francisco Oal March 31
Editors Herald After a long ab-
sence I will write once more to the
dear old Herald Would have written
sooner but have been too busy with
other matters Military life keeps a
person pretty busy mentally that is
he has got a lot of studying and think-
ing to do until he catches on to
everything especially the drills and
guard duty
Fort Miloy where I am now located
stands on a steep hill overlooking the
Golden Gate on one side and the fa-
mous Cliff House on the other and
commands a magnificent view of both
the Pacific Ocean and the Golden Gate
Here are located some of the largest
gunB in the world including Mortors
Horwitzers rapidfire and best of all
some of the largest disappearing guns
in America weighing over one hun-
dred tons apiece They will hurl a
1200 pound steel projectile with sufil
cjeut force to sink a ship from ten to
fifteen miles The enormous projec-
tiles travel through the atmosphere at
the terrifllc rate of five thousand feet
a second Thats moving some you
know A discharge of one of these
guns is equal to an earthquake The
concussion has been known to break
windows five miles distant
This country is different in every
respect from Texas The climate stays
about the same the year round Never
very cold and never very hot The
year is divided into two seasons wet
and dry The wot season begins about
the first of October and lasts the rest
of the year Overcoats can be used
at night the entire year It is just as
cold in July as it is in January
I would like to see letters every
week from Anderson county espec-
ially from the Blackfoot and Montalba
sections Wake up writers and give
the news please
Will close Next time I will describe

Mrs L B Nail widow of 113 Savage
street says I had eczema for over a
year It made its appearance in spots
on different parts of my arms and
hands While the case was not so se-
rious as many yet tho itching was
very annoying and tormenting It was
particularly noticeable at night or
whenever I overexerted myself 1
used everything I could think of and
many remedies highly recommended
and guaranteed to cure eczema but I
received little or no relief until a friend
told me about Doans Ointmont and I
procured a box at the Bratton Drug
Co a store A few applications of this
salve brought about great improvo

healed up and there has not been any
recurrence of the trouble

ALFRED SPEERS SURPRISE
Well Known Husines Man Tells
of Peculiar Experience
Few business men aro better known
throughout the country than Alfred
Speer of Passaic N J Although he is
over eightyone years of ago and tho
head of a large concern as well as the
editor of the Passaic Item yet he found
timo to writo tho following letter
hoping that it would bn of interest and
benefit to our readors
To the Editor I cannot keep from
expressing my surprise at the wondor
ful reliof and benefit I derived from
the use of Hyomei For some years
past I have been a victim to nasal and
throat catarrh and during that timo
Have expended a groat many dollars
to specialists and had my throat
sprayed washed and smoked week
after week Tho first time I used Hy
omei I was surprised at tho change it
brought This was a fow months ago
and I have used it occasionally since
It makes me feel so well that I often
forget and neglect its use for several
days but each time when I breatho it
the hawking and discharge cease and
it is wonderful how it acts
I am over eightyone years of age
and careful not to praiso anything un-
til I know what I am about
Respectfully yours
Alfred Speer
