THE FARMERS SAY
The Herald prints a communi-
cation today from a farmer one
of the most successful in the
county living at Pert and who
signs himself Little Jim in
which ho indulges in some criti-
cism of the Palestine merchant
Most of the Herald readers es-
pecially the readers of the Week-
ly Edition know whom Little
Jim is and they know him to be
a sincere solid sort of citizen
with ahead full of good ideas
In speaking of the contemplated
work of the Board of Trade he
said to the Herald man What
the business people of Palestine
must do is to convince the farmer
that they mean just what they say
The farmer cares nothing about
free wagon yards etc What he
wants is a fair deal from the buy
ers when he comes to town with
liis produce this he has not bad
in the past and every fairminded
man knows he has not I want to
come to Palestine with my cotton
and other stuff but do not do so
because 1 have not been treated
right If this Board of Trade
means business let them appoint
a committee to meet a similar
committee from the Farmers
Union and they will find out
pretty quick just what the trouble
isand what it will be necessary for
them to do to regain the trade the
liBWiuulMukg
Herald sincerely hopes
the Board will act upon this sug-
gestion and so thoroughly con-
vince the farmers of Anderson
county that they mean business
that they will do a bigger and bet-
ter business this fall than ever in
the history of the town And
again the personnel of this
Board should be sufficient guaran-
tee that everything possible is to
be done to correct whatever mis-
treatment has been accorded the
farmer in the past and he will
soon be convinced of this fact
All should work in harmony and
for the best good to the city and
county and the cooperation of
such citizens as Little Jim is
needed and must be secured
ABOUT OUR SCHOOLS
The resolutions presented the
city council lost night from the
school board shows a deplorable
state of affairs as regards the
overcrowded condition of our
schools and a condition that
should in some way be remedied
without delay It is claimed by
the mayor and the finance com-
mittee that the city has rfo funds
available for school buildings or
improvements such as suggested
in this communication The
council is now in correspondence
with the attorney general with
reference to issuing bonds to build
in the Fourth Ward and do not
jetfknow what the outcome will
be or whether they will be able
to make arrangements to build
The Herald offers this sugges-
tion The city of Palestine has a
large and commodious city hall
that could be converted tempo-
rarily into a school and building
until suitable buildings can be pro-
vided it would be a good plan to
convert this building or at leaBt
a portion of it into a school build-
ing A number of the higher
grades could bo comfortably lo-
cated there and with slight ex-
pense We cannot afford to ne-
glect our children A neighboring
city was up against this same

proposition a few years ago and
the city hall was used for a school
building for two years or more
accommodating three or four
hundred children and affording
relief until permanent buildings
culd be provided
If Palestine cannot build school
houses at this time she can at
least take steps to convert this
city hall into a temporary scb jol
building The third floor is cinly
used on special occasions only n
part of the second floor is abso-
lutely needed to accommodate the
city officials and if necessary
they can be shoved into tempo-
rary quarters Our school inter-
ests are paramount and should
have our first consideration
It would appear that people
like to be humbugged Thejjost
offico department has issued a
fraud order against the Peoples
United States Bank of St Louis
and the Womans Slagazlne of
St Louis both properties being
promoted by one E G Lewis
Lewis through his magazine pro
moted this bank scheme and se
cured subscriptions to the amount
of 2000000 He represented to
the subscribers that he was put-
ting in dollar for dollar for all the
money they subscribed The bank
examiners reported that it could
not be found that Lewis had sub
jjfirjbjjdiine opat but i tlio ii
trary he and his associates had
borrowed funds from the bank to
the amount of 90753883 for
which there was no security The
moral of this should be that peo-
ple do their banking with home
people and let these big winded
propositions severely alone
A man ho owned some sandy
land an Eastern Texas hill He
worked to get the bresh off
with a good and hearty will And
then he took his Georgia stock
likewise his Kclley plow and
skinned that hill a plenty from
then clear down to now He
plowed her up he plowed her
down but never once across till
he wore out that there Kclley
likewise the bronco hoss And
now the whole darn farm is gone
clean down almost to clay and
where its gone dont ask of me
but ask of Trinity bay
And then a man he boughtthe
hill another joskins skinned so
cheap he felt within his soul
that he had almost sinned Tlio
skinner when he took the price
it pleased him through and
through to think that he beside
the hill had skinned the buyer
too But the soilbuilder wunk
his eye while sowing some cow-
peas onwhich he later pastured
hogs then set him out some tree s
of peach and apple pear and
plum with berries red and black
and four hundred soil skinners
couldnt buy that old hill back
