lowed the attack Tuesday on the office
of the Kokumen Shlmbun the govern-
ment organ The mob attacked and
burned the official residence of the
minister of home affairs which stood
between the Nobles cluTb and Imperial
hotel and faced Hiblya park which
was the torm center throughout the
day Threatening demonstrations oc-
curred In the neighborhood of the olll
cial home of Premier Katsura and
Baron Komura foreign minister who
is now in the United States but th
police succeeded in preventing Injury ot
occupants or damage to houses Turb-
ulent ciowds filled the streets mid It
was feared much damage to property
was possible under cover ot darkness

St Petersurg Sept 8 Telegraphing
to Emperor Nicholas under date of
Sept 5 General Linevltch reported that
the Japanese Sept 4 started to ad-
vance along the Mandarin road and be-
gan constructing entrenchments but
retired after meeting the Russian ar-
tillery fire
The general also reported an offen-
sive movement by several battalllons
of Japanese accompanied by cavalry
and artillery In north Korea Sept 3
but the result was not announced In
time to be sent in the dispatch
The news of the signing of the peace
treaty resulted Immediately In an un-
wonted outburst of unwonted work at
the foreign office All the articles of
the treaty are being copied Each min-
isterial department will be supplied
with an official copy to the end that
every provision of the treaty shall be
understood thoroughly by each minis-
try particularly In the bearing on the
changes provided for by the treaty
which must be carried out by the diff-
erent ministers and departments
The carrying out of the provisions
will be proceeded with at once Th2
news of the signing of the treaty was
communicated Immediately by the min-
isters of war and marine respectively
to the army and navy An armistice
will become operative with the official
statement from here that the treaty
has been signed Many minor details
of the armistice will be arranged 1 nthe

The rumors that the peace treaty
contains a secret clause arc declared
on the best authority to be utterly un-
founded The treaty contains no
clauses which will not be published
with the ratification of the document
