It is one of the brightest papers In
Texas and for that reason the Herald
especially appreciates the nice things
Editor Joiner has been good enough
to say about it
Palestine needs an active civic
league that will Insist on her streets
being kept clean that will see that
there are no disease breeding pools
maintained and that will foster and
encourage the beautifying of the
homes and yards of the city This
work naturally belongs to the good

Something
every day
is doing In Palestine
morning on a secret mission Very
little could be gotten out of those In
charge of the party but the Herald
has put certain facts together and be-
lieves it means something good for
the town But the exact facts In the
case cannot be gotten at Jusc now
Palestine Is all right Just remember
that
Herald want ads do the business
The Pearlstone Grocery Company ad-
vertised In Saturday evenings paper
for six men for Monday morning By
6 oclock this morning the sidewalk
in front of the store was Dlockaded
with a crowd of men in answer to the
little ad The proprietors are con-
vinced that Herald want adg are re-
sult getters
Isnt It wonderful what a Arm hold
some of the old time church hymns
take on men On yesterday the writ-
er heard a church cnolr sing How
Firm a Foundation In the good old
way it should be sung and could but
notice the deep Impression It made on
the big congregation Very frequent-
ly we see a good service spoiled lit-
erally by a good sermon being fol-
lowed by one of the modern arrange-
ments labeled religious music which
run often times like this I want a
Man I want a Man I want a man
sion In the sky By the time one of
these songs Is finished all the good
Impression made by the sermon or
by a prayer has faded away and the
audience wishes a man would be pro-
vided and the music suppressed
Music has a great deal to do with a
church service and can add or take
from very materially
WITH THE EXCHANGES
After all has been said on tne sub-
ject that can be said the fact remains
that there are certain conditions
under which no man or woman should
be expected or required by law or cus-
tom to continue to live in tho married
state The divorce evil Is Indeed a
growing one and Its Influence Is un-
questionably bad but when a man
breaks all of his marriage obligations
or when a woman violates her mar-
riage vows what else Is to offer re-
lief except the divorce If more at-
tention was given to the subject and
conditions of marriage there would
be less need of the divorce confer-
ences Palestine Herald
In other words It Is a condition
and not a theory that confronts so
58krs
clety In the growing divorce evil and
the best way to treat it as the Herald
suggests Is to give more attention to
the subject and conditions of mar
liage Remedial legislation along
this Hue might prove helpful but by
far the greater task devolves on the
home and the church which after all
hy precept and example make and
mould society and are In the main re-
sponsible for such laxity as renders
necessary a resort to the divorce
courts Houston Post
That is the point exactly
Having secured a linotype machine
he Palestine Herald now wants a
ball park and baseball club and the
Herald generally gets what It wants
Beaumont Journal
Of course we want a ball park
Whats the good of wasting all of the
long summer afternoons when vc
could be occupying the hot side of a-
board seat rooting for a good ball

MR CAMPBELL AND THE GOVER-
NORSHIP
The following Is taken from
Palestine Advocate
A late issue of the Anglcton Times
says of Hon T M Campbell
He is the only real live candidate
for the office of governor who has vis
ited this section and judging from
his appearance we would tnink that
he Is big enough for the office and
the official cloak would fit him admir-
ably in every respecL
Alive Of course he is alive from
the crown of his superbly intellectual
head to the sole of his shapely foot
he Is instinct with life the life that
inspires attracts directs controls
The sentient indwelling power that
makes great generals statesmen
rulers the talent of council and the
genius of leadership
There Is nothing uncertain or shifty
In the whole makeup of the man His
eyes are blue and bright as steel and
when they rest on a mans face he
might just as well tell the truth in
the first place for their keen pene-
trating glance will compel It to come
forth But Mr Campbell is not all
fire and steel all Intellect and force
he has the gentler qualities that go
to make up a most lovable nature
and this It Is which attracts and binds About the best thing that can be
to himself his friends and neighbors said about Colonel loin Campbells
To see him In social life surrounded candidacy for governor Is that the
by his lovely wire and fair young railroad and corporate Influence Is
daughters presents the real man the j against him In demanding that cor
typical American citizen capable and porate Interests comply with the law
the
fjww jj ir By 4ipfuju Uim S
kindly and genial in the home atmos-
phere
The elements do so mingle In him
As to proclaim to all the world
This Is a man
If the people of Texas continue in
their present mood long enough
every form of governmental incom
petency peculation and graft will be
reduced to the lowest possible mini-
mum in this state as fast as the peo-
ple can record their will at the polls
and It can be executed by their
chosen representatives legislative
executive anil judicial
Present conditions sharply point
the moral that the price of capable
government as well as liberty is
eternal vigilance
It is a periodical awakening that
happens most opportunely at this
time when Texas Is just entering up-
on the most Important era of Its de
development
Not much can be accomplished in
the way of reform so far as the state
at large Is concerned unless the right
man is put In the gubernatorial chair
ns the successor of the present Incum-
bent
There Is reason for the hope that
a proper selection will be made as
the people are thoroughly aroused to
its being vitally necessary
The Messenger has very carefully
weighed the merits of the rival can-
didates for the Democratic nomina-
tion and It is of the opinion that Hon
T M Campbell Is the man who would
contribute most surely to the realiza-
tion of the people for reform
A mere business man or mere law-
yer however true a patriot he may-
be will not serve the purpose but one
who combines In himself all three at-
tributes will Such an one is Tom
Campbell
He Is a fine business man a sound
lawyer has sufficient knowledge of
statesmanship and is a Texan with
whose heart strings Is Interwoven
love for the grand Lone Star State
It is safe to predict that If he is
honored with this high office every
sinecure in the states public service
will be abolished ever dollar paid
by the people In taxes expended for
a valuable consideration that will In-
ure to their benefit the state finan-
ces be placed upon a sound basis the
enactment of vicious or foolish laws
be discouraged and safe and sound
legislation vigorously and effectively
promoted
Mr Campbell has expressed views
that ought to more and more strongly
commend his candidacy to favorable
consideration the longer they are
dwelt upon by the public mind
If there ever was a time In Texas
when an outgoing governor could
drop his mantle upon the shoulders
of any man the present is not such
a time
Any attempt of the kind deserves
the rebuke of lgnomlnous defeat
Mr Campbell Is running on his mer-
its and as they are abundant and un-
questioned they ought to land him In
the pilot house of the state His
firm hand and clear brain are much
needed there Marshall Messenger
SPbw S55S
would be an enemy to development
but the people are becoming tired of
the domination of the embryo trusts
in Texas as well as outside of the
state Angleton Times
The governors race has narrowed
down to the following entries T M
Campbell of Palestine O B Colquitt let
of Terrell M M Brooks or Dallas C
K Dell of Fort Worth Colonel H W
Wade of Qulnlan prospective Of
these Hon T M Campbell seems to
be in the lead especially In East Tex-
as Upshur County Kcno
Colonel Tom Campbell at a recent
speech In Center said that If he was
elected governor he would make the
lobbyists and corporation attorneys
jump out of the windows of the state
capitol building While the Leader
has a high esteem for Colonel Camp-
bell we would prefer seeing them
jumping out of the windows than to
hear tell about It Hemphill Leader
POLITICS AND POLITICIANS
The federal officers of Texas par-
ticularly those who have recently felt
the ax of the headsman are said to
be planning the dethronement of Col
Cecil Lyon chairman of the Republi-
can state executive committee and na-
tional committeeman from Texas It
is believed that a vulnerable point in
his armor has been found and It Is
intimated that the new Terrell elec-
tion law will be use In his undoing
The Republicans of Illinois have
decided to hold their state nominat-
ing convention at Springfield nay 14
Congressman Abraham L Brick of
the Thirteenth Indiana district Is to
be opposed for renominatlon by
Aaron Jones the head of the Nation-
al Grange and a lively campaign is
expected
Gen W C Oates exGovernor of
Alabama and a former member of
Congress has announced his candi-
dacy for alternate United States Sen-
ator The matter Is to be settled In
the Democratic state primary next
August
There are three avowed candidates
for the Republican nomination for
governor of Wisconsin to be voted
upon at the September primaries
They are State Senator James J Mc
Gllllvray of Black River Kalis Speak
er of the Assembly Irvine L Lenroot
of Superior and Gov James u David-
son of Soldiers Grove
Samuel P Colt president of the
United States Rubber Company and
an unsuccessful candidate for gover-
nor of Rhode Island a few years ago
Is now out for the United States sen
atorship to succeed Senator Wetmore
whose term expires this year
In view of the continued dissension
In the Republican ranks the Demo-
crats of New York State are becoming
more hopeful each day that they will
be able to win out in the next elec-
tion The campaign of William Ran-
dolph Hearst for the gubernatorial
nomination is causing considerable
uneasiness At present much talk Is
heard of Mayor Adams the reform ex-
ecutive of Buffalo as tne standard
bearer It Is figured that the record
of Mayor Adams as a foe of corrup-
tion would win him great support
while at the same time he has not
heretofore been prominent enough In
strong In business and public life is not to say that Colonel Campbell j fied with any one of the rlva factions 26Gt
