PROPOSITION MADE BY ELECTRIC
LIGHT COMPANY AS COMPARED
WITH OTHER TOWNS
In filing a petition for a new fran-
chise to grant the Palestine Electric
Light Company the right to furnish
power as well as light the company
also submitted a scale of prices to be
considered in connection with the new
franchise Mr Ed Howell of the light
company lias furnished us with a com-
parative list of prices paid by other
towns
There seems In be a mistaken Im-
pression on the part of a few people
in the city that the Herald In making
a stand for the gas plant and advocat-
ing the granting and extension of the
franchise to the company was acting
in an antagonistic spirit to the elec-
tric light compauy Nothing Ih far-
ther from the truth We want the gas
plant Wr the mime reason that we
would be unwilling to part with the
electric light service because as a
public utility It is of great value to
the city We are not opposed to the
electric light company In any partic-
ular We are a regular customer of
the company using both its light and
power service and our dealings with
it have been very satisfactory and we
do not consider the present rate ex-
orbitant or unfair We say this much
in justics to ourselves because we are
not willing to be placed In a lalse po-
sition before an Intelligent people
Hut referring to the subject of
lights Mr Howell has handed us the
following figures which tell their own
story
Yoakum has 8 arc lights at a coat of
10 per month each Paris 100 lights
at 585 each Denison 54 CT0

Good Sidewalk and Good Streets Com-
mittee Did Not Meet Last Night
The committee appointed by the
Board of Trade to take up the matter
of better sidewalks and better streets
for Palestine and who were to have
held a meeting last night to take up
the work did not meet as some of the
members were out of the city and un-
able to be presenL This committee
Is composed of loyal citizens and
thoughtful ones and out of their de-
liberations will no doubt rome some
practical solution of this question
The town needs to be Improved along
this line and the Herald would like
to offer an amendment to the work
they have in hand in that the matter
of a city park or several small parks
be located and beautified The Her
ald believes the men are Here who
arc loyal and patriotic and who love
tho beautiful enough to donate sucli
parks If the mutter was brought to
their attention In the right way A
small plaza In each ward would be
about the right idea and with a small
outlay of money together with a large
outlay of generosity and cultured
thought these places could be made
the pride of the city I ets have pret-
ty surroundings It is not all of life
to merely live and struggle for the
living but the beautiful adds to the
joy of living and makes for u better
citizenship Tills Is a recognized
truth as old as civilization

proposition of the local company to
furnish the city 12 arc lights at 700
per month for each light anil all
lights over the twelve will be fur-
nished at the rate of GOO each per
mouth
These figures are worth studying
as tills matter will come up at the
next meeting of the city council
The Herald has no hesitancy in-
stating that it stands for better lights
Tills town should have fifty arc lights
and put out these little old lights that
are now serving as street lights

OUR CLASS FUTURE
By Claudia Barrett
I was once traveling In one of our
American cities and stopped at a very
prominent hotel I was introduced to
the proprietor of the hotel as Mr Ed
gar Gresham I told him who I was
and he seemed very glad to see me
I did hot recognize him at first but he
told me that we used to he in the
same room at school and then I did
Edgar said lie had another one of
our old schoolmates staying at the
hotel It was Jewel Harris who was
staying there a few days on her way
to China as a foreign missionary
Next day Jewel aske d me if I would
not like to look around the city for
awhile I said I would he glad to do
so We were going along one of the
streets and saw the sign Dr Will
Blackshear Dentist I said Jewel
it seems as though I used to know a
boy by the name of Will Blackshear
She said Well that Is the very one
you used to know We went in and
saw him awhile but as he was very
busy we did not stay long We next
went into a dry goods store and
who should wait on us but Mozelle
Perry and Myrtle Morris One day
we went out into the country and
stopped at a small cottage to get
some water and there lived Gordon
Steele an old lonesome bachelor
While I was there a large circus
stopped in the city an io Paul Miller
was a clown and Eddie Maire a wild
beast trainer Next day I left and
went to another town On the train I
met Juliette Cooke Marguerite Craw-
ford and Mary Dunlop I stopped to
see my old schoolmate Annie Robin-
son While I was there a little friend
of hers came in and said she was on
her way to take her music lesson I
asked her whom she took music from
She said From Miss Almarine Al
len I stayed with Annie a few days
and while I was there some ot her
friends called among them were
Ima Brymer and Tempy Perry I
went to a theatre and one of the most
beautiful actors was Emory Sweet
ma n I also met an old maid named
Jewel White As I pnssed through an-
other town they were having a mili-
tary parade The first lieutenant was
none other than John Durham I
went to see a prominent lawyer Louis
Mlckley and his clerk was Miss John-
nie Link I stopped to see Iris Wel
born an artist and one day she said
she had the headache She told me
to telephone for Dr Allen When he
came I was very much surprised to
find lie was Roderick Allen I went
to the hospital and Flora May Ihitler
and Pearl Taylor were trained nurses
And last of nil I met Lanctn Vamliver
coming home from college and Miss j
Myrtle Allen who hud been teaching
In the same college but was now tak
lug vacation
