STREET LIGHTING
The Herald is not fully advised
concerning the propositions before
the council for street light contracts
Is the gas company making a bid for
such a contract or is the contract
asked for by the electric light com-
pany the only proposition before the
council If the gas company is In
the field for the contract and is In a
position to offer the city a contract
we presume the best bid will get the
contract But if the gas company is
not yet In position to make a bid for
such service but will be later on has
It so stated to the council and asked
for a delay In granting a new long-
time contract Tor street lights
These questions are asked because
there Is an opinion expressed by
many people that if the gas people
will be in a position to make a com-
petitive bid for street lights within
the next few months it Is a bad time
to enter Inlo a long contrqet with any-
one company The Herald presumes
the finance committee and other com-
mittees having in hand the settle-
ment of this matter have canvassed
the situation thoroughly and will do
what is best in the premises
About the split

log drag did it
This Is a good old town in the
spring time as in the summer Prom
strawberry time to watermelons
Dowie has paused in Chicago and
is looking over Into the promised
land In his case however it is not
very promising
In addition to establishing libraries
old Carnegie has taken to kissing as-
a side line So far Palestine has es-
caped both afflictions
The people or all this section or
Texas will go to Athens on the 21st
to hear Hon T M Campbell open
bis campaign for the governorship
Cotton choppers and berry pickers
will soon be in big demand all over
the country Run the idlers out of
the town or make them work the
streets There Is no excuse for any-
one being Idle these days
very vagrant In Palestine should
be made to hunt a job or be put to
work on the streets or the town It
is the Idle class that gives the offi-
cers trouble and that is a burden on

The coming session of the Summer
Normal for Anderson county to be-
held In this city promises to be very
largely attended by the teachers of
this section of the state and will be
a very important event Jn educational
circles Palestine should do what-
ever is necessary to make the slay
of the teachers in her midst pleas-
ant and profitable
The fact that Gooseneck Bill Mc-
Donald a North Texas negro politic-
ian is willing to bet 1000 that Col
quitt will carry his home county may-
be a startling piece of political news
and worthy of the display headlines
given It by a Houston morning paper
but it is difficult to see where this
is calculated to add any votes to the
Colquitt side Mr Colquitt has a very
strong following in Harris county as
well as elsewhere and hardly needs
the endorsement of Gooseneck
Bill Houston Chronicle
One of the candidates for governor
enjoys the privilege of an express
company frank and he Is sending out
tons ot literature to the people of
Texas and the express companies arc
bearing the burden of expense and
distribution The Hon Tom Campbell
mm m ev rf
etter he Is out to
his friends
Now which of these two gentlemen
would likely prove a friend to the
people and which a friend to the cor-
porations Of course express com
panies do not extend the frank priv
liege for nothing In other words If
that man is made governor the rail-
road and express companies will ex-
pect favors lots of favors
If every road leading into Denlson
was a good road the merchants of
Deniosn would soon see a great In-
crease in tiie volume of their country
trade The Herald believes that the
best Investment this city could pos-
sibly make would be to see that all
roads leading into the city were in
the very best possible condition It
would surprise the average citizen
to know how far a little money Ju
diciously spent under the direction of
a man who understands road uork
will go The great trouble with most
of the boealled load work In this
country Is that it Is done In a hap
hazard manner and with practically
no idea of what really ought to be
done and provided for The most im
portant thing to be looked alter Is
the question or drainage Keep the
surrace water fioin standing on the
road and the road will stand up under
pretty heavy rains Many or the
roads around Denlson are little more
than ditches and the water drains in-
to them from both sides Under
such conditions the road Is bound to
be a mudhole the greater part or the
time The split log drag is or prac-
tically no avail on a road or this
character It must be graded and
ditched ir the road is high enough
so that there Is a chance for the
water to get off or it then the split
log drag will put it in excellent con-
dition It used after ever heavy rain

THE PULLMAN PIRATE
It is astonishing that all the people
or this great nation intelligent rich
enterprising forceful people who
dare and do should quietly submit to
the extortion and tyranny of the Pull-
man Sleeping Car Company the most
greedy conscienceless soulless mon-
opoly that ever plundered a cowardly
public
There is no public enterprise en-
deavor or movement into which It
does not reach tor grart and grab
Houston business men who pay
it annually thousands or dollars
twice as much as what they get Is
worth cannot go on a little excur-

out the Pullman Pirate holding them
up for extravagant charges for carls 1
The company demands 45 a du

not here but elsewhere by reaso ii
of the fact that the pirate does nol
deem Houston of importance sulfy
