PLAYING A DOUBLE GAME
The Houston Chronicle very beau-
tifully expresses a sentiment in its
editorial columns calling on the press
and public to be fair in the matter of
quoting and representing the various
candidates for governor That is a
real pretty sentiment and if the
Chronicle had shown itself to be sin-
cere In It the Herald would unhes-
itatingly commend it Hut whilethe
editorial columns of that paper were
sparkling with such good will to all
the candidates Its staff correspondent
was pounding away at everybody and
everything except Bell This staff
correspondent has been especially vin-
dictive toward Mr Campbell and has
not In any instance as far as the Her-
ald has been able to observe given
that gentleman a fair consideration
The Chronicle and its correspondent
is under no obligation so far as the
Herald knows to support any special
man but as a public newspaper and
one that has fared well at the hands
of the people and especially the peo
pie of Palestine It should have the
manliness to be fair and honest Mr
Campbell was not treated right at
Athens by this paper and the occasion
of his opening speech there was pub
llshed in as unfair spirit as the cor-
respondent dared to put it without
putting hlms6U beyond credence by
intelligent people Those Sunday let-
ters sent Out by this staff correspond-
ent have also been of a character to
misrepresent Mr Campbell and print-
ed for no other purpose And Again
at Georgetown while the same staff
correspondent said that possibly two
hundred voters heard Mr Campbell
after having listened to a socialist
speech by a street talker and that
anyhow the crowd was brought to
town on that day by a trades day
program more reliable Information in
the Galveston News tells a very dif-
ferent tale as follows
Hon Thomas M Campbell of Pal
estlne was the principal speaker > es
lerday He was Introduced at the nn
polnted hour to the vast audience uy
tMr Lee J Roundtree who paid him
a t high tribute as a man and citizen
Col Campbell spoke along the lines
of his Athens speech and was fre-
quently applauded There wore fully
1000 to hear his speech from every
section of Williamson county and
many left the court house on account
of the seats being all taken
If the Chronicle really believes Jn
fair play It is time it was getting
busy with its staff correspondent and
seeing that he practices what It
preaches so finely
SMlx in a little pleasure as you go
along Just work alone Is a dry life
The farmers everywhere are In
good humor as the crop outlook so
far is very flattering
The Herald has Information which
leads It to believe that It Is only a
question of a short time now until
Palestine will have a bona fide rail-
road proposition to consider It Is
not definitely known yet from what

ExSenator William A Harris the
Democratic candidate for governor of
Kansas was a Confederate soldier in
the civil war and was one of the en-
gineers who built the Union Pacific

dential nomination to date are Wil-
liam J Bryan of Nebraska George B
McClellan of New York Jospeh W
Bailey of Texas John Sharp Williams
of Mississippi Charles A Culberson
of Texas William R Hearst of New

Probably the most notable feature
of the Republican side of the situation
with regard to the next presidential
campaign is the continuance of the
effort to keep President Roosevelt to
the front ns the prospective standard
bearer of hisparty for a second time
despite the presidents standing decla-
ration that hcwlll not be a candidate
Tangled for the last ten years the
situation In the Republican ranks In
Delaware Is more complex than ever
slnco the Regular Republican state
committee has reiterated Its demand
that the present legislature fill the
United States senatorial vacancy be-
fore the Regulars will agree to Join
with the Union Republicans In com-
mon primaries to reorganize the party
Leaving out President Roosevelt
the Republican list of eliglbles al-
ready cnterrd for the presidential
race Is considerably greater than the
Democratic The Republican list tip
to date leaving out of consideration
purely favorite sons mentioned from
time to time includes Fairbanks of
Indiana Root of New York Foraker
and Taft of Ohio LaFollettee of Wis-
consin Cummins and Shaw of Iowa
