THE CATASTROPHE
Is Considered Proportionately Greater
Than San Francisco Disaster
Valparaiso Aug 10 Copyright
190C by the New York Herald Co
Following is the situation at present
Valparaiso and the neighboring towns
are wrecked by the earthquake and
partially burned The catastrophe is
considered proportionately greater
than that ofBanFrancIsco
It Is impossible aT present to esti-
mate the dead and wounded Tho for
jroAwJJCPJaasd
The authorities have the situation
well In hand They have the distri-
bution of food under control Martial
law has been In force since the start
Steamers have been dispatched north
and south for troops and provisions
We do not consider that there Is any
real cause for fear of a famine There
are thousands of tons of wheat rice
and flour in stores and afloat which
the authorities have taken for distribu-
tion
The quakes recur from time to time
in diminishing force The whole pop-
ulation is camping on the hills in the
open spaces News from South Chile
reports severe but not appalling
shocks at Talcahuano Conccpclon
Talca and Zone The condition of all
towns In the Aconcagua Valley Is sim-
ilar to that of Valparaiso There is
no authentic news yet from Santiago
though a courier is expected from
there soon All wire communication
is destroyed The railroad tracks
tunnels and bridges are destroyed
The only wire working Is the sub-
terranean and sea cable of tho Cen
tral and South American Company
which has marvelously escaped In-
jury
The Valparaiso panic Is settling
down The situation is horrible In
Almcddral district and In Victoria
street almost the only building stand-
ing Is the mansion of Mr Edwards
In Santiago there was a tremendous
earthquake but no fire
The money collected for Chilean fes-
tivities by PresidentEIect Montt will
the victims
be applied
There were very few casualties
here among foreigners The weather
Is splendid
News from oflicial source states that
there was comparatively little damage
done in the city of Santingo A few
walls fell The casualties were about
twentyeight killed and one hundred
wounded
The disaster here Valparaiso puts
San Francisco In the shade The cit-
ies of Vina del Mar Qlipue LImache
Quiilota San Felliio Los Andes Casa
Blancn and several villages were to-
tally destroyed

NEGRO TROOPS
Likely Be Withdrawn
Brownsville Texas
Camp Mabry Texas Aug 19 It
seems to be generally understood here
that the outcome of the trouble at
Brownsville although none of the
army officers will say so will result
in a temporary abandonment of the
post at Fort Brown and the withdrawal
of the negro soldiers there which will
be likely to prevent further friction
The negro soldiers recently sent to

From
way and as they would have but a lit-
tle time to serve there it Is probable
the post will be placed in the hands
of caretakers until the troops which
are to succeed tho negroes arriveand
take their station there This is prob-
ably the very best solution of the mat-
ter
There Is not likely to be a perma-
nent abandonment of the post at Fort
Brown and probably the people there
will be glad when the temporary aban-
donment takes place
ENDED A BAD CAREER
An Angelina County Prisoner Hanged
Himself Last Night
Lufkin Texas Aug 19 The man
John B Roper with many aliases who
murdered without cause two fellow

self in his cell tonight using a strip
from a blanket
He acknowledged a few days ago
that he was a member of the Dalton
gang of bank robbers at Longvlow
Texas in 1S92 Sheriff Watts also
has positive evidence that Roper is
the man wanted in Arkansas for the
murder or Sheriff Boyd in 1S92 and
for which a reward or 1000 is offered
Roper has acknowledged to various
