SCIENTIST DESCRIBES A MEANS
OF COMMUNICATION SUPERIOR
TO LETTER WRITING
That magnetism can be localized Is
jthe discovery which forms the basis
of the remarkable invention known as
the telegraphone
This machine performs five differ
lent functions First it receives dic-
tation second it reproduces the dic-
tation third it reproduces at a dis-
tant point the machine being under
control at that point fourth it re
cords conversations between two per
sons over the commercial telephone
lines without in any way interfering
with the operation of those lines and
fifth it records automatically In the
absence of the subscriber from the
office messages coming over the line
during such absence The machine
being under the absolute automatic
control from the ordinary performing
function of the telephone line the
ringing or the bell starts the ma-
chine the machine sends a signal
over the line to the party talking no-
tifying him Uiat the machine is run
ning taking down his message and
then automatically stopping
Many business transactions are
carried on daily over the telephone
and the day is at hand when tele
graphone records will bo made of
each and every transaction and filed
away for reference The telegraph
one 1s destined to take the place
largely of the present stenographer
and no business or professional man
will think of writing bis business let-
ters lectures or sermons
Mr Poulson the inventor has in a
later machine replaced the cylinder
for the recording wires by steel discs
about 4 12 inches in diameter and
about 120 of an incb in thickness
The portability of these discs the
susceptibility of receiving records on
both sides the instantaneous erasure
of records at will and the absolute
secrecy of the subject matter of the
record leads one to believe It will in
the future bo a means of intercom-
munication superior to letter writing
The machine that perforins all the
ponders I have described is extreme
simple in construction Imagine a

TO DISCUSS MEANS OF BRINGING
ABOUT THE ELECTION OF SEN-
ATORS BY DIRECT VOTE
Special to th3 Herald
Des Moines la Sept 5 Several
hundred delegates appointed by the
governors of a majority of the states
of the Union all men of earnest
thought devoted to the best interests
of the country met today in convey
tion in this city to discuss means of
bringing about the election of United
States senators by direct vote
Governor Cummins acting in pur-
suance of a resolution adopted by the
last session of the Iowa general as-
sembly brought them together to ex-
change ideas and to recommend in-
formally some solution of the prob-
lem It is expected the deliberations
of the convention will occupy several
days
The convention has attracted great
attention as it is the first effort to or-
ganize the sentiment already existing
in favor of the popular election of sen-
ators The only thing the convention
can achieve Is to effect an organiza-
tion which may crystallize the senti-
ment and give the movement such an
Impetus that the desired amendment
may be achieved by one or the other
methods fixed by the constitution
It is the general opinion among
those present that ten years at least
will he necessary to bring about the
proposed reform There are two
ways of getting an amendment before
the people for vote Congress can
act on Its own Initiative in submitting
an amendment to popular vote or it
may be compelled to do so upon the
demand of twothirds of the state leg-
islatures The question must then be
voted upon at a general election
Twentyfive states through their gen-
eral assemblies have already adopted
resolutions calling upon congress to
submit to the people the question of
electing United States senators by
direct vote On several occasions tho
lower house of congress has passed
the resolutions but the senate has in-
variably killed it
