It is judging the other fellow by ones
own standard The Spanish have a-
way of slipping a little sharpedged
knife under the shoulder blade of an
enemy while tile face is turned in the
opposite way Such an opinion from
such a source is most natural

Help the Herald boost Palestine
The tovn is a good proposition and
will stand publicity of the right kind
Texas has escaped the blizzard
weather that has been prevailing in
other sections of the country this
week Texas is about the most pleas-
ant place on earth the year round
Palestine business men should fol-
low the example of other Texas towns
and hold a get better acquainted
meeting enjoy a few good smokes
and get together on some efforts in
behalf of the town
The Lufkin Daily News is getting
ready to install a linotype machine in
its office The News is only one year
old but has made good Lufkin is
v evidently a live proposition judging
by Its newspapers
This cold snap has caused the wood
man to feel his importance again and
bea director in a trust Warm
wiTTseeabe here however
Sown
andWood stock will go
then it will be ice
But
The Herald woud like to hear the
reasons why any man is opposed to a
white mans primary for the nomina-
tion of city candidates There must
be good reasons why some men op-
pose such primaries but we have
neveV heard them stated
Anderson county is the home of the
finest wrapper tobacco grown on the
American continent The government
experts are our authority for the
statement and the Herald expects to
see this industry make this the rich-
est county in Texas before many
years have passed by
The committee to arrange for the
Palestine Bryan Club rally should have
the cooperation of every loyal demo-
crat In this section and the event
should be made a big success The
attitude of Texas and other Southern
states toward Bryan will hae much
to do with deciding doubtful states in
his favor Palestine should set the
pace in Texas Rally the rally
The Beaumont Journal editor Is sore
because he has figured it out that
with the money expended in firin
salutes to every little foreign port
passed by the great American fleet
on its way to the Pacific a great
waterway In this country could be
built That is true but the said littlf
foreign ports would not in that waj
learn so quickly that Uncle Sam is u
big gun
Another great industry that is com-
ing to the front in this county is tilt
home canning business This method
of canning the fruit and vegetable
products has sohed a very important
question and beside saving a vast
quantity of goods that heretofore went
o wiste is proving the means of
bringing good money into the pockets
of the fruit and truck groweis And
the beauty of it is that the work can
be done with only a small investment
and a little work
A Spanish newspaper has just dls
covered that the battleship Maine was
blown up by direct orders from the
United States war department to fur
nish an excuse for going to war with
Spain This opinion is not at all sur
prising coming from such a source
The report that Hearst wants to
trade his independence league vote
for the privilege of naming the candi-
date for vice president on the demo-
cratic ticket this year should not dis-
turb any one and the democrats
should pay no attention to any such
proposals If the party stands for riny
thing it stands for a principle and
there can be no sacrificing anything
in trades in order to secure the prom-
ise of votes If Mr Hearst wants to
be heard in the party councils he
will have to come inside the party
The party cannot go outside to him
The Herald really and truly wishes
there was ome direct decisive way of
getting the Bailey issue before the
democratic voters of the state and
disposing of it one wayor the other
finally If Bailey owns the state and
the democratic party in the state as
he thinks he owns the national gov
Brnment then ire would like to know
it If wej are working for Bailey w e
want to resign our job and if we aic
working for the democratic party and
jood government we want to keep on
lie job The people should get up and
lemand a bearing on tills question
that we may know where we are
You may be assured that the Bailey
machine is keeping everlastingly busy
We saw evidence of this fact in the
recent meeting of the executive com-
mittee
