Sin is the cause of all panics
said Evangelist Lockhart last night
You ask me the cause of that which
will go down in history as the panic of
1907 and I unhesistatingly answer
sin Somebody was dishonest some-
body gambled and you and I have to
pay the price of their sin Dont think
sir you can sin and hurt no one but
yourself No man ever yet went to
hell without taking some one with
him To protect my own little ones
Ive got to see that the neighbors
children that play across the street
are kept from sin
It is the panics caused by sin that
I want to talk about That was a

ttWas Heard With Interest By
Large Audiences
Despite the rain almost three hun-
dred were In the Bible School at the
Christian church and large audiences
greeted the evangelists
The service opened under the direc-
tion of Mr W F Lintt who demon
strated from the first song that
y which has been so often said that he
j Js a prince of platform directors His
standard of
solos are up to the high
his general work and In the initial
services he has won the love of the
people and their willingness to follow
hlm
body of Charles H Morris the leading
coal baron of Iowa was borne home
dead because he had tried to rid his
mines of the damnable saloons There
were seven thousand such panics as
that last year in as many homes in
America There were one hundred
and ten thousand men last year went
staggeringinto drunkards graves and
there was panic in one hundred and
ten thousand homes In 1907 twenty
thousand homes were broken up by
social crimes to say nothing of the
unnumbered thousands of young men
and women who sold that which is
more priceless to true manhood and
womanhood than life itself
There are four great evils that I
expect to fight against while I am in
your city and Im going to talk
straight and call things by their right
names About these four major sins
gather every other form of iniquity
They are the desecration of the Lords
day gambling in its many forms the
social sin and intemperance
I want to say the evangelist de-
clared emphatically that Im not
here to array one man against another
or to fight other people and other
churches and their opinions but Im
here to fight sin and declare war on
the devil and all of his servants
I tell you the livest question in
America today is not whether the
trusts shall be curbed and predatory
wealth legislated against it is not
whether we shall have a revision of
the tariff or stindpat It is not wheth
er we shall have government owner-
ship of railroads or rate regulation it
is not municipal purification but I
tell you that the live question back of
all these is sin and how it may be
overthrown
Im not a pessimist but I cannot
blind my eyes to the fact that the cal-
endar of crime in America is fir
greater than any one of the leading
nations of Europe The average num-
ber of murders in England per year to
one million population is 1C in Franco
it is 27 in Germany it is 1C but in
the United States it is 02

went into a bottomless pit and let me
turn that into the marts of trade le

a revival of business as this nation
has never known
There is not a man of presidential

Air Brush In Painting
The compressed air spray has been
used for a considerable time for
painting large surfaces like the Eiffel
tower and for whitewashing tunnels
The newer art of decorating small sur-
faces by means of an air brush seems
to have reached Its highest develop-
ment in Germany Of the two types
of apparatus one is held like a pencil
and the other is used like a revolver
and the air for spraying is supplied
from a cylinder of compressed air or
carbonic acid gas or In a more primi-
tive way by a hand pump It is ca-
pable of a great variety of applications
The airbrush can be used for ordinary
Industrial painting by any unskilled
workman white an artist of some abll
ity can paint flowers and other de-

MODELS USED 2500 YEARS AGO
r
Among Interesting Egyptian Relics In
New York Museum
Fourteen models used by an Egyp
Uan sculptor 2500 years ago are on
view among new objects gathered bj
the New York Metropolitan Museum
of Art
Some of the bits of sculpture have
upon them the red lines and the mark
ings which the master so long ago put
in them to show where certain carv
ing was to be done They are in soft
limestone and frail as is the ma-
terial they have lost nothing of tho
beauty of outline A queen or god-
dess in several poses is one of the sub-
jects
Most Important of the new speci
mens in the museum is the large ba-
salt sarcophagus of HormehetbitI
which was purchased from the Egyp
tian government It weighs six tons
On it is the inscriptlon in hieroglyph-
ics that its occupant was the royal
treasurer the royal friend the over
seer of the palace the overseer of the
royal chamber honored by Ptah
Seker
Eight vessels of sliver and gold
bearing the name of Rameses II have
also been added In the collections as

GAVE PLUG HATS BAD JOLT
Undesirable Citizens First Wore Them
at Junction City
George W Martin the veracious
secretary of the Kansas State His-
torical society tells the following
story of the first plug hats in Junc-
tion City It was in the year 1870
when John A Anderson was pastor
and I was a leading pillar of a church
in Junction City Charles R Carver
who then conducted a famous gents
furnishing house came Into the land
office one day and said that a num-
ber of the boys wanted plug hats He
could not afford to send for them un-
less he had orders for eighteen I in-
sisted I would not wear such a thing
but he badgered until he got an order
from me and from Anderson The
hats came and were delivered Satur-
day afternoon A beautiful Sabbath
day followed and Anderson and my-
self ventured to church wearing plug
hats Then we found the other 16 be-
longed to gamblers and they marched
Into church single file down the west
aisle carrying those hats most grace-
fully and filled all the available front
seats They knocked Anderson silly
for that service and it was a sad blow
to the plug hat in Junction Kansas

The OneDress Season
It is curious to note the influence
of Xachh tJipon the spread of so es
sentially an unfashionable thing as
the recent currency stringency
It was a rich mans panic there-
fore It is now a sign of richness to be
poor Many a household which is
abundantly able to keep its style of
living on an exact level with the
standard of last winter is lopping off
familiar luxuries simply because the
great social leaders have found it ex-
pedient to do so They call it a one
lress season on Fifth avenue and
Fifth avenues imitators are prepar-
ing to make a hard times party as
chic a form of entertainment as It was
in Richmond during the civil war
By and large the phenomenon is
beneficial feature of the situation We
nave learned that the pace must be
> ased off a bit and we can yield to
the inevitable far more easily If it is
jfflcially recognized as the fashionable
thing to do
High Honor Worthily Won
To command a great ocean steam-
ship Is one of the highest honors that
an befall a seaman Capt Pritchard
he commaudor of the mammoth Cun
irder Mauretania has well earned the
osltlon which he now holds He came-
o it by steps of wellmerited promo-
tion from a humble beginning A na-
tive of Wales he was left an orphan
when a lad and obeying his mothers
last wish set out to become a sailor
U first he acted as cook on a small
sailing vessel but in a couple of years
he entered the maritime service prop-
er At the end of 12 years he was
captain and part owner of a brig
Subsequently he made voyages to
every part of the world After 21
years of this life he entered the Cun
ird service where he has been for
28 years He has commanded nearly
every big Cunard vessel
A Gentle Hint
When a boy Gov Hughes knew
something of dire poverty His father
was earning a salary of 2000 a year
in a Baptist church in Greenpoint
which was frequently unpaid The
familys larder was often empty and
the salary long overdue The father
hesitated to ask for it but when he
did one night in prayer meeting It
was In these words I cannot Invite
any of you to my house to dine for
I must tell you frankly that our
household stock Is so reduced that
I should feel ashamed to have one of
your own servants sit at my table
