James Smfth a Negro Will Be Elec
trocuted Thursday For the Mur-
der of James Flynn
Herald Special
Richmond Va April 7 The elec-
trocution of James Smith colored
whichis set to take place in the peni-
tentiary here tomorrow will add an-
other to the long list of negroes who
have been put to death in the electric
chair since electricity superceded
hanging in Yirginia The crime for
which Smith was sentenced to death
was the murder of James Flynn a
Grand Army veteran in this city last
January
Robbery was the motive for the
crime Flynn had been in Richmond
for some time doing odd jobs as a
gardener He was seenthe day be-
fore the murder and was in company
with Smith and another negro The
crime was committed on the out
skirts of the city abdut midnight the
man being beaten into insensibility
and left for dead Some passersby
found the old man and rushed him to
the hospital where he died without
regaining consciousness
Suspicion pointed to Smith who
had a bad reputation He was ar
rested and some of the dead mans
clothing was found in a house that
the negro had occupied the night after
the murder After his arrest the ne-
gro confessed to the crime

Preparations Making For Celebration
of the Eightieth Birthday of Gen-
eral William Booth

London April 7 Great prepara-
tions are being made for the celebra
tion of the eigthtieth birthday of Gen-
eral William Booth the founder and
head of the Salvation Army who was
born April 10 1S29 One of the fea-
tures of the celebration will be a mon-
ster demonstration in the Crystal Pal-
ace in which twentyfive thousand or
more members of the organization
will participate Despite his years
General Booth is still active in the
cause which he has made his slife
work Following his return from a
trip to South Africa he has visited
Russia during the present month in
an effort to induce the emperor to
permit the Salvation Army to extend
its organization and operations to in-
clude that country
