THE PLOT
Continued fnm cage I
me the Honor Man ot the College
to be called out at this hour of the
night to see a dog 1 chuckled when I
thought of the joke I would have
made of it if it would only have
been another fellow in my place
On reaching the room where my pa-
tient was we found the aunt kneeling
by the side of a chair in which lay
the dog I bent over him with all
the dignity I could command and ex-
amined him thus passing ten or lit
teen minutes Thought I then could
not find anything wrong with him 1
forced a sugar pill down his throat
and said he would recover You must
leave a prescription for him Doctor
said the aunt I pulled out by blank
and pencil and write one Doctor
you must put the hour and for Fido
upon it or we may not get the right
one you see it might get mixed with
these showing me several others I
complied I was then taken home af-
ter promising to call again if my pa-
tient grew worse
Nothing more did I hear about my
strange visit and I had given up hopes
of over llnding out where the young
lady and her aunt lived About three
weeks later I received my number
of our college paper There In big
headlines was written The Midnight
Call of the Honor Man and my pre-
scription copied verbatim
With tno paper came a letter from
one of the boys saying that ns I had
played so many Jokes on my colleagues
ho thought it time the compliment was
returned lie had two cousins living
near mo and they entered Into the
plot with him The dog was not sick
the aunt was but It and the young
ladys sister and I was the laughing-
stock of all
But that is long ago It wa3 easy
enough to find the house where the
two young ladles lived I thought I
would have won the girl Well I did
try but you see I am a bachelor and
their family physician

WORLD TAKES CARE OF ITSELF
Real Philosopher Does Not Worry
Much Over the Terrible Plight
of the Future
One may ardently advocate the con-
servation of natural resources without
losing rest In worrying about what
wo shall do for crosstlos when all
forests are destroyed or for warmth
when coal Is exhausted It is really
unwise to get hysterical over such
troubles so long as they aro under
contract for future delivery Nono
of U3 should bo deficient in philoso-
phy Tho real philosopher Is ho who
having a sure tip that things aro com-
ing his way smiles upon adversity
with Indulgence
It Is just as well to consider that
by tho time crosstlo material quits
growing all tho Pullmans will bo in
tho air with all tho berths upper and
that a thousand years from now if
the scarcity of coal runs tho price up
to 1000 a ton somo miserable sin-
ners of tho present may have cause
to rejoico In tho piospect of lower
temperatures
Tho world Is going to take care of
Itself and the guess that tho little
earth will be rocking along on sched-
ule time a hundred thousand years
hence is just as good as any other
Why therefore worry Why attempt
to solve the puzzle of navigating the
future of dreadnoughts too big for tho
sea leave that to future Ilobsons
If tho safe anu sane people will just
make up their minds to cultivate
philosophy and to practise it many
disturbing factors would be elimi-
nated There Is nothing like determ-
ining that it will work out all right
it always does
Best Things Nearest
Tho best things aro nearest breath
in your nostrils light in your eyes
flowers at your feet duties at your
hand common work as it comes cer-
tain that dally duties and dally bread
are tho sweetest things of life Rus-
kin
SANDS OF THE SEA USEFUL
Of Great Importance In Glassmaking
and Warfare Moving Character
of Quicksands Explained
The snnds of the sea aro singularly
useful They are of primary Impor-
tance In glassmaking They have an
Important plnco in warfare as a bank
of sand twenty inches thick is proof
against modern riflo shots The elec-
trical properties of sand show that it
has positive electricity although a rod
of silica tho chief constituent of sand
Is negative
Tho slngulnr drying effect which oc-
curs when a stretch of wet sand Is
pressed by tho foot is duo entirely to
an alteration in the piling of the sand
grains Normnlly the grains aro close
together but abnormal piling is
brought about by pressure of the foot
tho space between tho edges of tho
grains being enlarged and tho water
drained away If tho pressure of tho
foot Is continued the sand becomes
wetter than ever tho partial vacuum
quickly bringing water from tho sur-
rounding sand
In quicksands tho moving character
is thought to bo duo to tho Imprison-
ment between tho grains of gases from
orgnnic matter
