SECOND YEAR CONCLUDED
With this issue the Herald has
reached the second milestone in its
race for existence
That we are gratified puts it but
mild When two years ago the Her-
ald was launched many of our most
prominent and knowing shook their
heads and shrugged their shoulders
Why lend their assistance or even
the POSSIBLE weight their name
might carry with it to or in a small
ill appearing paper that was doomed
by a foregone conclusion
It would be interesting to even the
newspaper folks to have an idea of
what > e have gone up against
The obstacles we have had to over-
come the influences we have had to
counteract Wo bad at one time
gone so far as to try to please every-
body but quoth the raven never-
more We have had people try to
tell what to put in and wliat to leave
out and even some societies ol large
membership attempted to act as press
censors and put a muzzle on the Her-
ald and one organization disliked us
so cordially that they not alone plac-
ed obstacles in our direct path but at-
tempted to wield the lash of the boy-
cott
And right hero lies partly the story
of our success As Nero watched the
burning of Home so have many
watched for the downfall ot the
Herald and while they watched they
read AND THEN REREAD
As a moneymaker the Herald has
not been a phenomlnal success
When business and prosperity as-
serted itself wo increased the size of
the paper giving to the reader as
much as possible for the amount re-
ceived We have not bought up any
banks as yet nor erected any sky-
scrapers we have not bought any of
the immense tracts of line land of
which Texas has such a superfluity
On the otne r hand Ave have fought
and won our way and as stunning as
it may sound the Herald has paid its
own way from its inception Our cir-
culation is very satisfactory and con-
tinues to grow
Keeling tints encouraged by the suc-
cess wo have attained wo are now
ready to take up the work of the com-
ing year witli more zest and zeal We
shall endeavor to profit by past
eMioriences and will be glad
to utilize any suggestions and well
meant criticisms in bringing the Her-
ald up to that high standard which a
Jewish weekly should strive to main-
tain M ti

AN OLD ANNOYANCE
Every Jew and Jewish pournal
should lull in line with the sentiments
against the Jew Comedian as ex-
pressed so vigorously by Mr Ounst
the editor of The Jewish Record
His attitude will undoubtedly gain him
the enmity of many theatrical people
just as a similar one has done lor the
Herald but justice demands that these
considerations be laid aside and the
nuisance handled in such lashion that
stage managers will be glad to abate
It and speedily at that
We quote Mr Ounst That Jew
comedian of the duo gains laughs as
do the grotesque caricatures in comic
supplement no one ever saw anything
like them and the laugh is at a mon-
strosity
It was only when the young man
sang a parody in Yiddish that ho
arrived Not onehalf ot one per cent
ol that audience understood what he
was saying but everyone there knew
that he was ridiculing the Jew and
they laughed
Now all selfrespecting Jews under-
stand that this is carrying caricature
too lar They must not forget also
that the remedy for this evil lies
within their own hands to be ap-
plied when they arrive at their
own discretion Let one and all take
to heart the advice of Mr Gunst
To you who read the Record or
any other Jewish Journal stay away
lrom the Casino the scone of the
comedians misadventures 1 will see
that the manager of the Casino gets
a copy of the Record If he intends
to continue such affronts to Jews
stay away from his theater Then
you touch his weak spot the box
office and sooner or later our vic-
tory will be won
ALBERT M GUNSTi

JEALOUS OF MR NATHAN
STRAUS

iv
We read with much regret that Mr
Nathan Straus contemplates discontin-
uing the free distribution of paBteur
THE JEWISH HERALD
ized milk among the poor of New
York Tlie reason for this unfavorable
action lies in the fact that Mr Straus
and his great philanthropy have be-
come the subjects of underhand per-
sonal attacks actuated no doubt by
the jealousy that rankles deep in those
of petty souls Every thoughful per-
son knows that next to the nourish-
ment derived by children from the le-
gitimate source there is no substitute
so wholesome as the milk procured
from healthy animals this product
sufficiently diluted to agree with in-
fant stomachs The least contamina-
tion works untold harm on the childs
delicate organism Whether pasteur-
ization of milk does more harm than
good is a moot question but one thing
is certain that it is belter lor the
poor to receive the boon of Mr Straus
kindness with the doubt attached than
to be altogether deprived of so great
a necessity as this rich fresh milk
put up under a costly sanitary sys-
tem and delivered to them iree of
ill charge
It is to be sincerely hoped that Mr
Straus will pass by the slanderous
attacks of the jealous backbiters and
see his way clear to doing Gods work
as heretofore
He who labors to promote the phy-
sical well being of his race he who
strives to increase the health happi-
ness and intelligence of mankind can-
not miss having reflected on his
own soul the benign smiles of those
whom he is benefitting
To the back ground with these pet-
ty caviler Let no action of t heirs
mar the sublime work of one of our
great sons in Israel
We reproduce a communication
from Mr Straus relative to this great
philanthropy for ho is devoting his
efforts to providing pure milk not
alone in the United States but in Ger-
many as well No one would under-
take to estimate offhand the exact
expenditure of money necessary to
carry on this good work The read-
er can then better judge what hard-
ship the discontinuance of this would
curtail on the poor of New York Mr
Straus writes
It is quite correct to claim that the
high mortality among infants in
Germany is directly attributable to
the poor quality of the milk In
the United States wherever I have
introduced pasteurization the mor-
tality rate lias fallen as if by mag-
ic And I am able to point to a
similar result in Sandhausen near
Heidelberg I have just received
the monthly report from Sandhaus
en for July and this shows that
in this period not a single child
under two years of age succumbed
Their average mortality before the
introduction of pasteurized milk was
5 to C a month This is remarkable
evidence as all the children In the
village up to the age of two years
use this milk it shows what can
be done how many human lives
can bo preserved Sandhausen be-
longing to the district of Heidel-
berg is a poqr vijla e It is no dif-
ferent from other villages of the
same class for it is no cleaner and
its inhabitants are just as careless
about their treatment of children
and the purity of the milk consum-
ed as other villages The reason
for this is that most of the women
of the village work in factories 1
made but one condition when 1 in
tioduced pasteurization and this
was all cows must be inoculated
with tuberculin betore their milk
may be consumed This 1 give as
an instance only and the report not
a single death for an entire month
proves that my experiment can bo
set in operation everywhere with
similar results at slight cost and in-
significant effort In Karlsruhe
where I erected a laboratory for milk
pasteurization for the Womans Un-
ion of Baden the infant mortality
is now only onehalf as large as it
was before Hie pasteurized milk
was introduced
THE JEWISH LITERARY SOCIETY
If the members and especially the
friends of members do not soon
awake to the fact that the outside
world is waiting for the organization
to make good the failure will cer-
tainly be a grave reflection on Hous-
ton Jewry To prove the truth of
our contention that we urgently need
a society lor the benefit ol those who
would have headquarters for some-
thing more than mere social pleasure
and also to show that outsiders are
watching us we reprint the following
lrom the American Israelite
If the plans of the Jewish Literary
Society of Houston Texas are per-
fected and the members certainly
intend that they shall be that or-
ganization will soon be in posses-
sion of a handsome building all its
own at a cost of about 10000 The
lot for the building has already been
purchased from Congregation Adatn
Yeshurun About 7000 of the
necessary amount is already in sight
and it is believed that the rest can
be raised without trouble This or-
ganization numbering 2 r > 0 mem-
bers is at present holding its meet-
ings on Walker street The purpose
of the organization is the improve-
ment of its members and also with
special reference to those who have
just come from foreign lands with
the view of making them the best
citizens possible
A CONTRAST
The London Star writes When
Russia was advancing towards free-
dom and liberalism we did nothing
but oppose her Now that she is in
the power of a barbarous and faith-
less reaction and that her hands are
red with the blood of her best sons
a liberal statesman meaning Foreign
Minister Sir Edward Grey hastens to
embrace her
The above from a nonJewish source
Now contrast the attitude of those
who took part in the cringing cere-
mony as told in the following des-
patch
While Czar Nicholas was on a
visit to Riga in Courland he received
a Jewish deputation which in the
name of the Jewish community ten-
dered him bread and salt with the
usual ceremonies of allegiance and
hospitality
A most disgusting commentary con-
sidering that the participants are
brotherslnfaith of the best sons
whoso blood is on the head of thia
selfsame Nicholas the butcher
