AMERICAN INDEPENDENCE
BREEDS PRESUMPTION
Mr Goldberg states on last Avceks
editorial page that just 29 unaffiliat-
ed Jews expressed their Avillingness
to join the I O B B This very
small number cannot fail to arouse a
painful train of thought Dr Cohens
efforts on behalf of Bnai Brith in-
terests were not rewarded as they
should have been No doubt the now
candidates were properly impressed
by the worthiness of the cause which
the rabbi sponsored laying aside his
other many pressing cases and com-
ing to Houston for the purpose Tho
20 may congratulate themselves on
their good judgment Tho refusal of
the others who were approached un
v successffully is a reflection on their
hoss sense They failed to consider
how exceedingly valuable Dr Cohens
time is
f It has been deplored times Avithout
number how thoroughly American in-
dependence levels oven important dis-
tinctions Tho more inferior tho char
actor tho more loudly he prates ot
being as good as tho noxt one Wo
admitwo are all equal before tho law
THE JEWISH HERALD
in our privilege to life liberty and congregations
the pursuit of happiness But nature
lms endowed some individuals with
superior characteristics to which she
intends tho rank and file to do hom-
age Theso Inherent qualities iniscs
distinctions between man and man
with which justice as commonly in-
terpreted has nothing to do It is
so in tho AVorld of mailer No one
would dream of disputing the superior
value of gold over iron of diamonds
over glass of silk over cotton Nat-
ure has ordained that these necessa-
ries should find their proper sphere
in an humble capacity
Nature in many instances compels
us against our will to do reverence
and render obedience to those on
Avhom she has seen fit to lavish her
favors Dr Cohen is one of these for-
tunate mortals If avc steel ourserves
against tho good influence dissemin-
ated by such men as Rabbi Cohen it
is undoubtedly our loss Those who
refused to respond properly may have
erred in ignorance of tho importance
of lie gentleman who approached
them For their intormation we Avish
to say that Dr Cohens activities on
behalf of suffering humanity are in-
numerable His collection avIUi the
Galveston Immigration Bureau has
made him a figure of national promi-
nence lie is a potent factor in Texas
Jewry His influence for good is be-
yond estimate He knows not sell
Dr Emil G llirsch on his visit
to Texas after the Galveston flood
frankly admitted that tho country ow-
ed Dr Cohen a debt of gratitude which
it Avould never be able to discharge
His community has attested its af-
fection for and appreciation of this
great man in Israel by electing him
their spiritual leader for life
So in consideration of Dr Cohens
exalted position great scholarship
and beneficent impulses toAvards all
men Ave hope that those Avho refused
his appeal AVill reverse their decision
and fan in line at the earliest oppor-
tunity It is never too late to do
good
HARD TO PLEASE
Congregation Bnai Joshuriui or N
Y has the reputation enviable or
otherwise of changing rabbis very
frequently Dr Tintner considered a-
very efficient man in the rabbinate
resigned the first of this month The
congregation is seriously thinking of
extending a call to Dr Magnos form-
er associate rabbi of Temple Emanu-
El In case this is carried through to
the mutual satisfaction of both par-
ties it will be interesting to watch
how long they Avill retain the services
of their new leader
UNDERPAID SERVICE
We are informed that after twolvo
months diligent search the Federa-
tion of Synogogs of London has been
unable to obtain the services of a rab-
bi to act as Chief Minister of its 50
The requirements are
unimpeachable orthodoxy a Ph D
degree a thorough general Talmud
ical education The incumbent Avhon
found is to consider himself engaged
for eleven long years at the sum let
us whisper it of 2500 per anum
Imagine an American rabbi undertak-
ing tho supervision of 50 congrega-
tions at this figure
It is further stated that The Jewish
Religious Union is in a similar quan-
dary in its efforts to get a liberal
Jewish rabbi to open its now syna-
gogue The meagerness of the salary
offered must be trouble here also and
Avas undoubtedly the reason of Dr
Enelows nonappearance as the first
reform rabbi in England United
States congregations pay liberally and
therefore got and retain the best
Money counts in the rabbinate as well
as in other walks of life
