(llieck \ our Social
Security Account,
Official Advises
Workers and self-employed
people are enroll raged to check
their soci.il security accounts at
least once every three years ac-
cording to Raymond W. Ward,
field representative for the Tem-
ple Social Security Office.
This may bo done easily with a
pre-printed and addressed postal
card furnished froe of charge by
all social st“curity officios. Ail
that needs to be done is to insert
your name, social security num-
ber, date of birth and acidres*
before signing and mailing the
card to the central accounting of-
fice in Baltimore, Maryland.
Ward pointed out that it is im-
portant for each person to make
sure his account is correct because
the amount of future benefits to
him or his survivors are based on
the amount of wages or self-
employment income posted to his
account. If an error or an em-
ployer’s failure to report wages iff
discovered within three years,
quick action can be taken by the
Social Security Administration to
correct the account. If over three
years have gone by. it is more dif-
ficult and sometimes impossible to
correct an account because of the
statute of limitations and other
factors.
The Social Security Administra-
tion maintains approximately 125
million separate individual ac-
counts and has an index of nearly
5 million employers. Most of the
huge job of posting all the ac-
counts is done by advanced auto-
mation techniques. The posting
of these accounts are almost fool-
proof. Ward stated, but sometimes
an employer fails to report wages
or reports them under an incorrect
name or incorrect number or even
without a number. Any of these
might cause an error in an ac-
count.
Since so much depends on your
account being correct, you should
keep a record of your income each
year and check your account
regularly to make sure it is cor-
rect. The handy card for doing
this may be secured by writing
the Social Security Office, 415
First National Bank Building,
Temple.
