ENGINEER SAYS
SITE IDEAL FOR
NEW BUILDING
Bids For Construction
Expected by March
Or April in 1938
E. L. Strickland, construction engi-
neer for the U S. Treasury Depart-
ment, came to Rockdale Tuesday and
mad^ the topographical survey of the
Loewenstein lot which has been pur-
chased by the Department as a site
for the new post office building.
In addition to getting the metes and
bounds and other data concerning all
service connections, Mr. Strickland
| caused holes to be dug on each corner
j of the lot to ascertain the charcater
j of soil to be encountered in building
i the foundations for the building. These
I holes were three by five feet, and were
I dug to a depth of ten feet, with
another five-feet penetration made by
boring.
The engineer stated that in his
opinion Rockdale had picked an ideal
site for the new building, and that
its erection w uld entail the minimum
fo difficulty a to proper drainage and
foundation work
Mr. Strickland Gated that it the
construction of this building pursues
the ordinary ccur.se, 'the Depart
should ask for bdis oh the con-
struction of the building by March or
j April, and that it is possible the
building may be completed and occu-
pied by January 1, 1939 However a
number of things may tarn up that
will tend to dTay matters in the sub-
mission and acceptance of bids. Bad
weather during the construction period
is also p. frequent cause of delay.
Mrs. Lena Loewenstein said Tuesday
that she expected to sell the old resi-

I AST WEEK in The Reporter’s maga-
zine section there appeared a short
story concerning a successful "duck
ranrh” being operated "near Rock-
daie." by Mrs. Lon Carr, who accord-
mg to the story, owns a flock of 609
ducks. Rambler has had several in-
quiries from local people regarding
this alleged local duck farm. In fact
most everyone seems to doubit the
'eraeity of the story and to tell you
’he truth, Rambler himself has never
heard of Mrs. Carr or her duck farm
