Colt All-Stars
Defeat Legion
The lull before the storm of
state-playoff games has set In on
the American Legion as the only
game scheduled for this week is
with the Babe Ruth League all-
stars Friday at 8 p. m.
A contest Saturday with Croc-
kett had been set ter: several
weeks, but a headon car collision
near Crockett early Saturday kill-
ed 2 of the players on the Crockett
Connie Mack team. The fatal
crash also postponed lust Satur-
day’s game with Centerville us the
2 boys also played for the Center-
ville American Legion team.
Alter several American Legion
players tried out with the Hous-
ton Colts lust Thursday and Fri-
day, the local players changed
sides Friday night and challenged
the all-stars of the camp. Coaches
Hop Priest and Larry Smith
guided the outstanding players to
a 10-0 triumph. The Colts pushed
across 6 runs in the top of a
stormy ninth frame to erase a
Rockdale lead.
Rockdale had held the lead for
only one inning when Leon Wen-
zel walked the first three all-stars
who came to bat in the ninth. Bob
Rombach, Denton, blasted his
third single of the night to end
Wenzel's eight inning stint on the
mound. Dan Yezak came in with
the bases loaded and the score
tied. However, before he put out
the side 4 more runs came in on
2 walks and an error.
The locals went down 1-2-3 in
the ninth.
Two Arguments
More than the usual was in
store in the ninth frame for the
large crowd that attended the
game as Larry Smith, couch of the
all-star team, and Ernie Laurence,
Rockdale coach, were involved in
flareups with the umpires.
Smith argued with the 2 infield
limps in the top of the ninth and
got his way. He contended that his
runnei on third base, Marvin
Macicek, should be allowed to
score on an overthrow at first
base. Laurence didn’t fare as well
with the plate umpire as he was
thumbed out of the game in the
bottom of the last inning.
Rockdale Takes Lead
The locals provided the fans
with excitement several times
against the all-stars from all parts
of Texas. Rockdale took the lead
brielly in the seventh as Jimmy
Killen led off with a first-pitch
blast off Jerry Lee Jones, Austin,
and got a double from the deal.
Johnny Richards and Darrell Mott
walked and Johnson sacrificed.
Donnie Laurence got on by a field-
er’s choice to fill the sacks. Wil-
fred Jacobs and Ronnie Laurence
clubbed singles and the all-stars
threw in 3 errors to give the Leg-
ion a 6-3 advantage.
Rockdale held the lead in the
first inning as Johnny Richards
walked and scored when D. Lau-
rence bunted out to the pitcher
to score the lead run.
The all-stars went ahead in the
second as Rombach got on by an
error, Bill Utsler singled and both
scored on 2 errors. By the time
Rockdale could cross the plate a
second time in the fifth on Rich-
ards’ single and Mott's booming
triple, the Cults had added a run
by Rombach in the thir. He walk-
ed and Robert Batts, Taylor, sin-
gled him in.
Complete Double Plays
Rockdale's alert infield made 2
double plays. Wenzel, Mott and R.
Laurence unreeled the first DP
in the third inning, and R. Lau-
rence and Mott completed the
second twin-killing in the l'oorth.
Charlie Woods, Arlington, was
the winning horler in relief. Roy
Medley, Houston, pitched the first
3 innings. Jones pitched only 2/3
of an inning as Rockdale knocked
him off the mound in the seventh
inning.
