month that Portuguese Commu-
nists and Democrats of the ex-
treme left discussed coordination
at election efforts in Lisbon, but
no confirmation of the report was

announced its plans.
For three years and 11 months
of every four years, political pan-
ties do not officially exist in Por-

parties pretty well killed the
pre-1926 parties. But their
ghosts rise during the 30-day cam-
paigning period.
Unorganized, practically for-
gotten and leaderless, they don’t
constitute much opposition to the
well-organized powerful Nation-
al Union and the undoubted pop-
ularity of Salazar.
More T uan a Party—
The campaign season will be
drab by British. French or Am-
erican standards.
The National Union is more
than a political party. Its ramifi-
cations reach into every sector of
national life in one way or anoth-
er. It has Monarchist and Chris-
tian Democratic tendencies, and
also has attracted the younger
generation of Portuguese which
is more interested in social pro-
gress than in politics.
Salazar’s most powerful post la
probably the chairmanship of the
central committee of the Nation-
al Union rather than the premier-
ship.
Many of the candidates select-
ed for the national assembly and
other elective offices by the Na-
tional Union are not U.N. mem-
bers although they arc generally
sympathetic with its aims. It is
estimated that half of the outgo-
ing assembly do not belong to
