Face Pampa Today
Borger Tomorrow
Westerners
LUBBOCK Westerners, who
briefly left, and then returned to
the losing trail last week attempt
to permanently leave the loop dia-
mond behind them when they take
on Pampa today and Borger to-
morrow, as the 4-4A district slate
moves into its last half of action.
Westerners who brought a 7-3
record into loop play, have fallen
to a 1-5 district reading, in overall
slate at 8-8.
STARTING nine for Lubbock
today and tomorrow will be Dan-
ny Thompson, third base; David
Griffin, second; Larry Stockton,
first; Sam Darden, right field;
Chad Utley, center; and Julio
Moreno (0-4) on the mound, against
Borger tomorrow.
Last Friday, Westerners snapped
a four-game losing streak when
they tripped Palo Duro 2-1, on
Danny Thompson’s sixth inning
bases-loaded single. Lubbock took
a second inning lead when Bob
Webb scored on a Don error, fol-
lowing a walk, double and a walk
to Westerner batsmen. Dons knot-
ted it at 1-1 in the fifth when Bill
Loftin slapped a solo homer. Da-
vid Griffin opened the sixth frame
with a base hit. Griffin advanced
when Larry Williamson was safe
on a fielder’s choice, and
Brooks West loaded the bases on
a Don error, setting the stage for
Thompson’s run-scoring bingle.
Chad Utley went all the way on
the hill, raising his record to 5-3.
SATURDAY, the Westerners’
bats were stopped on five hits by
Amarillo’s David Dodge, falling to
the Sandies 6-1. Julio Moreno ab-
sorbed the loss, lowering his mark
to 0-4.

Intramural Sports Program In
Final Round Of Spring Activities
FOLLOWING the completion of
basketball action, intramural
sports swing into homeroom divi-
sions where bowling, track, table
tennis, checkers and volleyball
have begun.
Mr. Bob Boynton, intramural
sponsor, devised a point system
whereby not only the homerooms
that are champions will be recog-
nized, but also the one homeroom
will be recognized as overall
champ in all of the sports.
HOMEROOMS will receive 25
points for entering a team in vol-
leyball, 20 points each for bowling
and track and 5 points for each
team entered in table tennis or
checkers.
A forfeited game in volleyball,
bowling or track will deduct 20
points. Table tennis or checker
match forfeits will each deduct
5 points.
FOR A FIRST place finish in
any of the sports, the homeroom
will receive two points for each
team entered in that sport. Sec-
ond place will receive IV2 points
and one point will be awarded for
third.
In volleyball activities, the
league is divided into men’s, wo-
men’s and co-ed divisions. Co-ed
teams include three men and three
women.
MEN'S TRACK events include
the 100, 220 and 440 dashes and
the 440 and 880 relays. Women’s
cinder events are the 50, 100 and
440 dashes and the 440 relay. Pre-
liminaries will be held later in the
season.
Track intramurals will be held
either April 23 or April 28.
Bowling competition will consist
of three-member teams, who will
engage in an elimination tourna-
ment.
AT THE END of the school year,
the homeroom with the largest to-
tal of points will be crowned as
“Outstanding Intramural Home-
room.”
In recently concluded cage ac-
tivities, FCA team 1 and the Frito
Banditos won the division cham-
pionships.
Conclusion of volleyball is at
hand, with playoffs underway.
Following a single elimination
tourney, which was established
between all homerooms. Teams
emerging undefeated are engaged
in single elimination playoffs. The
overall championship team has not
been announced.
