QUESTION: 1 am quite wor-
ried about my house ferns. It
looks as though they are af-
fected with a disease. There are
brown spots like insects on the
leaves. Please advise me about
what I should do. 1 do not want
to lose them.
Janinlca, New York
ANSWER: Probably the
spots on your ferns are caused
by a scale insect which not in-
frequently infests hhuse ferns,
especially the holly fern. These
insects can be washed off with
a hike-warm suds made of Ivory
soap applied with a small, soft
brush. Malathlon also is good to
discourage scale. You would not
want to use tt in the living
rooms, but the plants couid be
sprayed In the garage or base-
ment. If the infestation Is heavy.
niore than one spraying will he
necessary. Space them a week
apart-
Howevcr. when examining
your ferns, do not make the mis-
take of jumping to the conclu-
sion that the brown. *iny spores
on the backs of the fronds are
caused by red spiders or any
other Insect pest These are not
bugs, as ofte •- suspected, but
the spores of seeds of the fern
itself.
Many people are confused be-
tween scale and spores on terns.
The accompanying GARDEN-
GRAPH shows the difference
between them. The spores or
seeds are in a regular pattern
and are only on the leaves. Scale
is scattered Irregularly on the
leaves or fronds and also ta
seen on the leaf stalks
