HOMELESS LOBSTERS
LONDON (UPD — Don’t scrap
your old car. Give it to a home-

British marine scientists say
the world’s lobster population

Old cars, the scientists say,
would do nicely. It seems that
lobsters are attracted to old
iron.

Hints From Heloise
by He/o/se Crus*
Dear Heloise:
How can I clean an inexpens-
ive white plastic bag that looks
like patent leather? Mine is last
year's model and looks awful.
Mrs. McCree
All I can tell you is I>ow I
cleaned my pocketlnxik.
First I used a wash cloth and
some warm soapy suds and got
off what I could.
Next I poured some lighter
fluid (follow CAUTION direc-
tions on container — it IS flam-
mable, you know) on two facial
tissues and wiped away. And.
did it ever clean it ! I thought
I hnd a nearly new purse.
About that pinkish stuff on
the handle and around the top of
the purse — the lighter fluid
helped remove it but didn’t take
it all off, so I decided that from
now on when I purchase an in-
expensive, light-colored, plastic
purse that I will clean It each
month or so with the fluid.
CONTRACT BRIDGE
By B. Jay Becker
(Top Record-Holder in Masters' Individual Championship Ploy)
The lighter fluid did not hurt
my plastic. I paid three dollars
for the purse and figured I had
nothing to lose.
Heloise
Dear Heloise:
Anyone who has ever tried
to cut an acorn squash in half
knows that sometimes it seems
almost impossible.
But Heloise, I found a way!
Just pre-heat the squash for ten
minutes and it s as easy as cut-
ting an orange!

Declarer's ability to enter his

necessary, frequently plays an
Important part In his manage-
ment of a given contract, but it
la Just as important to the de-
fenders to be able to maintain
open lines of communication
with each other.
Naturally, anything that
either side can do to disrupt the
other side’s communications is
all to the good, and many hands
feature exactly this type of bat-
Consider this deal, where
8outh In in three notrump and
West leads a diamond. Declarer
(O 1969, Kin* Features Syndicate, Inc.)
lias seven made-to-order tricks
and his only source for two
more lies in spades.
So declarer must obviously
arrange to lead spades twice
towards dummy to establish his
eighth and ninth tricks, but at
the same time he must keep an
eye peeled on what the defend-
ers are doing or he may wind
up losing the battle
Thus, if South plays low from
dummy and wins East’s jack of
diamonds with the ace, he fin-
Ishes behind the well-known
eight ball when East takes the
first spade lead with the king
and returns a diamond. West's
diamonds become established
before dummy’s spades, and the
defense eventually scores three
diamonds and two spades to
nip the contract by one trick.
Declarer can prevent this
from happening by permitting
Eaat to win the opening dia-
mond lead. If Bast continues
the suit, West’s diamonds drop
out of the picture, for, while he
may later establish them, he
will then have no entry to cash
them.
East cannot overcome this
obstacle to defensive communi-
cations by shifting to a club at
trick two. Again declarer ducks,
and, as a result, 8outh makes
the contract because there is no
way for either defender to both
establish and cash his long suit.
Apparently It takes two ducks
to cook East’s goose!

Dear Heloise:
When a button must be re-
moved from a garment, the task
| will be simplified, and the pos-
i sibility of damaging the mater-
| ial will bo avoided. If the tines
I of a fork are inserted between
i the cloth and the button and a
i razor blade is used to cut the
| threads.
Mrs. Milton Suasman
j Dear Heloise:
We have been having very
strong winds late'y and our
climbing rose broke from Its
moorings.
Have nothing else on hand I
braided three old nylon stock-
j ings and tied the plant up with
| this. Made a beautiful braid and
i did the job perfectly.

LETTER OF LAUGTHER
Dear Heloise:
Each morning ,ny houseful
of “gremlins" make their beds
before they go to school.
They don’t know It’s much
; easier than coming home to
! find that Mon has mode the
bed HER WAY.
Whenever Mon find* an un-
made bed, *h« strips It, folds
the spread, blankets, sheets and
pillowcases and places them
neatly at the foot of the grem-
; lin's bod.
It’s much simpler to make a
bed In the morning than to start
from scratch in order to have
a bed to sleep in that night.
Hope this may work for other
frustrated gremlin trainers.

Today is Thursday, April 24,
the 114th day of 1969 with 251
to follow.
The moon is in its first quaiv
ter.
The morning stars are Venus,
Saturn and Mars.
The evening stars are Mer-
cury and Jupiter.
On this day in history:
In 1701, the first American
newspaper to he printed on a
regular basis — The Boston
News-Letter — was published by
John and D mean Campbell.
In 1877, Northern rule of the
South following the Civil War
ended when President Ruther-
ford Hayes ordered federal
troops out of New Orleans.
In 1898, Spain declared war
on the United States after re-
ceiving an American ultimatum
to withdraw from Cuba.
In 1967, Soviet cosmonaut
Vladirmlr Kamarov was killetf
when the re-entry parachute
snarled following an orbital
space trip.
A thought for the day: British
clergyman John Tillotson said;
“They who are in the highest
places, and have the most pow.
er, have the least liberty, be-
cause they are the most olv
served."
Please warn your mothers
that baby powder can be very;
dangerous in the hands of todd-
lers and infants.
If the powder is accidently
spilled on a baby's face, and
too much is inhaled, it can
cause death.
Always keep powder cans out
of the reach of children.
I don’t think enough parent*
are aware of this.

True !
Just tried it, and you are a
good "egg” to tip us off.
