Life's Journey
Una eetnce e(ftuuce was the last of six children, born to Osborne
and Mattie Prince, June 15, 1906 in Kingsbury, Texas. Alma accepted
Christ at an early age with membership at Peaceful Rest Baptist
Church in Moody, Texas, where her father served as Deacon. She
later joined Corinth Baptist Church in Temple, Texas.
ae family relocated to San Antonio, Texas in 1939 making this
their home. In the mid 1940's the family joined Greater Corinth
Baptist Church under the Pastorage of the late Rev. J Henry
Hardeman and the late Rev. B. Tyree Alexander. She served in the
following positions, President of the Ladies Aide Society, Baptist Bible
School, Youth Ministry, Sunday School and she was instrumental in
modernization of the Ladies Restroom. Upon her death, Alma was the
oldest member of Greater Corinth Baptist Church.
tina'a education included attending the renowned St. John Institute
and Dunbar High School in Temple, Texas where she graduated. Her
community civic involvement included being President of the PTA at
Booker T. Washington. Under her leadership the school purchased
playground equipment, thereby providing a safe haven for the kids to
play. She was also a longtime member of Order Of The Eastern Star
Lodge.
G&na was united in holy matrimony to Julius Caesar Echols,
October 22, 1931 in Temple, Texas and this union lasted seventy-three
years. To this union five children were born. Alma entered the
workforce at Kelly Air Force Base in 1952 and retired from Lackland
Air Force Base after twenty years of service, performing in the
Culinary Arts Career Field. Alma lived to see nineteen United States
Presidents elected, starting with Theodore Roosevelt. She was blessed
to witness the first black nominated for the Presidency. One day after
Alma departed this earthly journey, Barack Obama became President
Elect.
ns was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Julius
C. Echols, Sr., son, Julius 0. Echols, Jr., daughter, Ruth Ann Tucker,
grandsons, Ronnie Haughton, Eric Powell and Winfred Shephard. She
leaves to cherish her memory, her daughters, Aletha D. Carter and
Charlene Powell; son, Josephus Echols, Sr.; nephew, James Clint
Williams; a special friend Mrs. Lucille Grigsby and a host of other
