sub-varsity basketball
Dobie’s junior varsity boys
basketball team lost to Bay-
town Lee in the consolation
game of the Clear Creek Tour-
nament over the weekend.
Jeff Hudson scored 57
points in three games and was
named to the All-Tournament
Team.
Hudson had 24 points in a
71-67 loss to Lee, and John
Scanlin added 12 points for
Dobie. Rick Dixon tossed in
10 points in the game, while
Calvin Perry had eight, Jeff
Steinig had six, Adam Garcia
contributed four points, and
Kevin Carpenter finished with
three points. Joe Carr and
Chris Williams had two points
apiece to round out the scor-
ing for Dobie.
The Longhorns opened the
tourney with a 54-38 win over
North Shore, with Hudson
pouring in 18 and Dixon add-
ing 16. Steinig and Scanlin
added six points each and both
Perry and Carpenter finished
with four points.
Dobie was then defeated by
Clear Lake 69-59 despite a 15-
point performance from Hud-
son. Scanlin and Perry tossed
in 12 points each, and Carr
added 10. Dixon tossed in five
points, while Carpenter had
three, and Steinig finished
with two points.

take third
Dobie’s sophomore boys
basketball team took third
place in their own tournament
over the weekend.
Dobie defeated South
Houston for third place, while
LaMarque won the champion-
ship with a 59-38 win over
Scarborough, the only team to
defeat Dobie.
Dobie bounced back after
the 17-34 loss to Scarborough
with a 43-33 victory over
South Houston. The
Longhorns hit 85 percent of
their free throws on the night
and Bruce Watson added
four. Snooky Lane rounded
out the scoring for Dobie with
two points.

zone defense helped slow
down a potent run-and-gun
and converted 9-11 in the final- Bulldog offense.

Dobie with 14 points and six
rebounds, while Davy Flick-
inger tossed in 11 points, and
Craig Tyer added eight.
While Lane and Flickinger
were leading the offensive at-
tack, Lane and Chris Cook
took charge defensively. Cook
pulled down four rebounds in
the contest.
Dobie opened the tourney
with a 54-46 win over La Porte
behind the 18-point perfor-
mance from Lane. Tyer added
13 points and nine rebounds,
While the defense was doing
’ its job, Dobie hit 49 percent
from the floor.
Dobie’s only loss of the
tourney resulted from Scar-
borough’s fast-break baskets
early in the game. Dobie re-
covered later but could not hit
enough shots to catch up.
Scarborough led 20-8 after
one quarter and held on to a
27-20 advantage at halftime.
Dobie is now 8-3 overall.

Dobie’s freshman A boys
basketball team was defeated
by Sam Rayburn 38-32 in the
third-place trophy game of the
PISD Tournament over the
weekend at Rayburn.
Dobie reached the third-
place game by defeating La
Porte in the opening round 40-
37 before bowing to Cypress
Creek 49-47.
Darren Andrus was Dobie’s
top player for the tourney and
leading scorer in each contest.
In Dobie’s victory over La
Porte, Andrus scored 11
points. Dobie’s loss to Cypress
Creek happened despite a 19-
point performance by Andrus,
and both Andrus and Brian
Cummings led the way in the
final game with eight points
apiece.
Cummings also tossed in
nine points in the Cypress
Creek game.
Freshman B
lose two
Dobie’s freshman B team,
lost to Clear Creek and Clear
Lake in tournament play at
South Houston over the
weekend.
Dobie was defeated in the
first game 31-29, despite a fine
effort by James “Doctor”-
Dovzak who scored nine
points. Bruce Bingham also
tallied nine points in the game,
but Dobie could not overtake
the Wildcats.
Dovzak again led the Dobie
squad in the loss to Clear Lake
with 10 points.

parade of double-figure scor-
ers. Cole, Geissen and Coe
had 12 points each, and

John Geanangel tossed in five
points in the victory.
Dobie will take a 12-3
record into the district season
which begins this week, and
hopes for a first district title
still appear brighter than a
Christmas star at this stage in
the season.
