“Hustlin’ Homs” near perfect round
9FORTS
By Glenn Sattell
Although an important
game was played late last night
in Baytown and an even bigger
match looms large for Friday
night at 7:30 p.m. in the Field
House against Pasadena, now
at full strength, the 1981-82
Dobie “Hustlin’ Horns’’
overcame their biggest scare of
the year early last week before
bombing North Shore. Both
games were played in the Field
House.
Dobie was nearly, literally,
hammered into the court by a
Texan team that drew so many
fouls they finished the game
with only four players. Six
Holt interim Bear coach
Jimmy Holt is the interim
head coach at Beverly Hills
until a replacement for former
head coach Troy Hill can be
made, according to Harry
Morgan, assistant athletic
director for the PISD.
Holt joined Hill and two
other coaches on the Beverly
Hills staff at the beginning of
the 1981-82 school year. Hill
was given a transfer to San
Jacinto Intermediate effective
Jan. 1,1982.
It has not been determined
whether or not the new head
coach will come from within
the school.
“It may be someone within
the staff or it may be someone
else,” said Morgan who is still
in the process of making a
decision.
Texans fouled out of thfe
game. But Dobie prevailed 65-
59 with 33 free throws.
North Shore rolled over a
lot easier: 85-38. Both teams
entered the game with only
one loss, but only Rayburn
played like they wanted a
share of the lead which was
firmly held by the “Hustlin’
Horns.”
Rayburn came into the
game sky-high. During
pregame warmups, Texan fol-
lowers set up stereo equipment
near the bench, blaring out
rock and roll music that
seemed to only add fuel to the
fire. A new hit song by an up
and coming band rocked the
Field House, while the Texans
went through their pregame
drills. AC/DC’s “For Those
About to Rock” echoed in the
arena, but another popular
song, “Let’s Get Physical”
would have been more ap-
propriate for the occasion.
Dobie was sent to the
charity stripe some 55 times as
a result of an over-aggressive
bunch of Texans who hacked
away with wreckless abandon.
Had every foul committed
been called, it would have
been even worse. As it stood,
the Texans were lucky they
had four players still eligible.

Usually, when a basketball
program turns its fortunes
around, the climb back to
respectability is a long and
tedious one. Most of the time
a basketball program is turned
around because one outstand-
ing player draws interest to the
sport and recruiting the better
talent becomes easier. For that
reason, it becomes a long
process of rebuilding.
But at South Houston High
School, that climb back to
respectability has become
more of a leap than a steady
rise. Solid team-play and a
determination instilled by
first-year Trojan coach Greg
Clary have taken quite a few
steps out of the climb.
The 1981-82 Trojans have
displayed calm and confident
play for which big games have
been won as a result. In last
week’s only game, the Trojans
steadily whittled down an
Eagle team that is looking
stronger than an 0-5 record
would indicate. Although the
Trojans held the lead most of
the way, it took clutch free
throw shooting and a couple
of sharp passes to the basket
to outfly the Eagles. Louis
Soto hit four freebies down
the stretch and scored a big
basket late in the game from
an Ed Hernandez pass, who
himself hit two big free throws
late in the game.
South Houston led by only
a field goal with 5:24 left in
the game when Soto hit only
his second bucket on the
night. His only other two-
pointer gave South Houston

give you a break on your taxes. Beginning January 1, 1982,
anyone with earned income can open an Individual
Retirement Account, even if you are already covered by
a company retirement program.
Here’s how it works:
You can invest up to $2,000 a year in your Individual
Retirement Account and deduct this amount from your
gross income. You can earn money market rates* on
your account and have the added benefit of a tax defer-

its first lead of the contest
early in the first quarter.
Hernandez made it a six-point
lead when he scored on an in-
bounds pass with 4:47
remaining.
The Trojans shuffled from
a man-to-man defense to a 1-
2-2 zone and back again in a
matter of two minutes,
shaking up the Eagle offensive
plans. The ploy enabled South
Houston to hold Pasadena to
just three points in the span.
A pair of Hernandez free
throws with 2:12 left put the
Trojans into a 46-38 advan-
tage. With 1:38 to play, Her-
nandez bounced a perfect pass
underneath to Soto, who laid
it in and Soto came through
with four additional charity
tosses in the last minute.
The Trojans could not open
up the game even though they
controlled the tempo through-
out. South Houston led 10-5
with 2:31 left in the first quar-
ter, but the scrappy Eagles
took their only lead of the
game with 13 seconds left in
the initial stanza. Scottie
Graves put the Trojans ahead
to stay with two free throws at
the end of the quarter. Graves
later hit another field goal to
give the Trojans a five-point
