Joe Taylor finishes Two
Year Stegosaur Project
by Joe Taylor
Joe Taylor has finally fin-
ished a two-year long huge
Stegosaur project. In 2009,
Randall Gabrel of Woodward,
Oklahoma commissioned Joe
to sculpt a life-like model of a
Stegosaums. Taylor based the
sculpture on one that was ex-
cavated near Dinosaur, Colo-
rado over a twelve year pe-
riod from 1995 to 2007. Joe
lead the dig for Dr. Carl Baugh
of the Creation Evidence Mu-
seum in Glen Rose, Texas.
The sculpture is 12 ft tall
and 25 ft. long. The largest of
these giant herbivorous ani-
mals was 19 ft. tall. Taylor had
to remove the ceiling in his
museum to sculpt the animal.
He chose 3 in by 4 ft by 8 ft
sections of blue foam, supplied
by Selle in Lubbock, to rough
sculpt the animal, then covered
it with detailed skin of plaster.
“I developed a new formula
of plaster to sculpt the skin
with and also developed an-
other hybrid plaster plastic for-
mula for the final cast.” Tay-
lor says.
Joe also sculpted a baby
Stegosaur to go beside the big
one. Mr Gabrel wants to put a
sign by it saying, “Which one
do you think God took on the
ark?” He wanted a little boy
to sit on the back of the big
Steg, so Joe posed his six yr.
old great nephew, David Tay-
lor for it. Another part of the
project included Joe molding
a column from a Cambodian
temple at Ta Prom that has
what appears to be a Stego-
saur carved in it. An exact
copy of it is in a museum in
Dallas where Taylor molded
it while on display. If it is a
Stegosaur, as it appears to be,
then they didn’t die out millions
of years ago.
Taylor says that one of the
things he referred to was a
stone found in a grave in lea,
Peru that is 800 years old
which shows a stegosaur and
a man together. Another of
these stones shows a man
riding a bridled dinosaur.
The model of the dinosaur
sculpture had to be molded so
it could be cast in outdoor
material. Those molds took six
months. “We cast it in August
and began gluing the huge sec-
tions together. James Taylor
and assistant Randy Fowler
(1988 CHS grads) welded up
the metal framework to mount
the hollow sections over. A
young trainee from Minnesota,
David Mikkelson assisted me
last summer in the brutal heat
and again this summer. An-
other young lady from Lub-
bock, Sara Bmgle, also help
this summer, along with vol-
unteers from Uncle Sam and
the medical profession”, Tay-
lor said.
Since Stegosaurs are one
of the most complicated dino-
saurs, Taylor decided to base
its eyes and color on chame-
leons which are some of the
most complicated modem liz-
ards. So each side is colored
differently than the other. The
Stegosaums had some 24 leaf-
shaped bone plates running
along its entire spine terminat-
ing with four big 18 inch spikes
or horns at the end of its tail.
None of these big bone plates
or spikes were attached to the
