“Clean-up” Drive
To Get Under Way
Here Next Week
A city-wide clean-up campaign
will be conducted the coming week,
to end in a final special effort
next Thursday when every resident
of the town is urgently requested,
by proclamation, to clean up on
and around his premises. Accord-
ing to the proclamation, you are
asked to deposit the debris near
the street in front of your house
so that city and county trucks
which are being furnished for the
pick-up job that day, may haul the
rubbish to the city dump for dis-
posal.
On Friday, August 8, weather
permitting, the entire town will
be thoroughly sprayed.
The Lions Club is sponsoring
this project and the city and coun-
ty commissioners are co-ordinating.
We, too, beseech you to make this
city-wide and thorough so that at
least we will have made an effort
to prevent contamination and
spread of disease.
Ft. Worth Family
Escapes Serious
Injury In Mishap
Mr. and Mrs. Bill Passmore and
daughter of Fort Worth escaped
serious injury early last Saturday
morning when their car was over-
turned in a creek bed just west
of the Johnny Meurer home on the
Archer City-Windthorst highway.
Passmore, driving the vehicle home
from a vacation in Colorado, fell
asleep at the wheel and the car
ran into the ditch just past the
edge of a bridge. The three, ap-
parently all asleep at the time of
the mishap, were treated about
4 o’clock a. m. at the Archer Hos-
pital for lacerations and bruises.

PVT. M. J. BAUGHMAN, JR., TO
TAKE AIRBORNE TRAINING
AT FORT BENNING, GA.
Saturday’s election here went off
without undue mishap and it seems
that except for the disappointed
candidates for public office every-
one is fairly well satisfied—that is,
except those who were opposed
to the quarter of a million dollar
bond issue to build a county hos-
pital This bond issue deal didn’t
draw the kind of vote that was to
be desired. It carried by a meager
majority of only 42 votes. Accord-
ing to grapevine, a move is under
way to contest this balloting. More
about it later on.
Elsewhere on this page is the
tabulated returns on county and
district races except those who
were unopposed, as for instance,
that for sheriff, tax assessor and
collector, won by Claude Morrison,
incumbent, who was unopposed.
Lola Beatty also was unopposed
for county treasurer after the
withdrawal of Pauline Knox Baker.
In Commissioners’ Precincts Nos.
2 and 4 the incumbents, Tony Pey-
sen and Roy Kelsey were the only
ones who appeared to have wanted
the places.

Smitsom Calls
For Help In
City Clean-up
in response to a request by Per-
ry Pittman in regards to the un-
sanitary condition existing in the
numerous “outside toilets” in Ar-
cher City, I would like to say: any
attempt to “clean-up” Archer City
before the “outside toilet” prob-
lem is corrected would be only a
poor attempt to “clean-up” the city.
I have been called frequently to
inspect “outside toilets” because
of unsanitary conditions and I have
not seen a single “outside toilet”
that would pass inspection. I would
like very much to recommend to
the progressive spirited citizens of
Archer City that they establish a
real and tangible program and a
person responsible for the program
fo help us solve this problem.
DR. HAROLD L. SMITSON,
County Health Officer.
Bill Holder Gets
Foot Broken In
Freak Accident
Jeweler Bill Holder suffered a
broken foot last Friday while calm-
ly attending his own business. Bill
and Johnny Blackman were stand-
ing talking at Archer Ice & Serv-
ice Station, each with a foot prop-
ped up on the innertube testing
vat, when the vat toppled over,
whacking Bill on top of his right
foot and breaking the large bone.
The foot is causing him some pain,
although seems to be getting along
alright.
ARCHER COUNTY FRIENDS
TO THE PEOPLE OF ARCHER
COUNTY
I am certainly grateful for the
splendid vote and support you gave
men in my campaign for state
representative. I wish I could see
each of you and thank you per-
sonally.
Sincerely yours,

A. J. Berend of Windthorst was
a News Office caller Tuesday.
August said that in recent corre-
spondence from a son, Clp. Andrew
Berend, in Korea, the corporal
stated that he is putting in 12
hours daily at hard labor on a
bulldozer.
Another son and his bride, Mr.
and Mrs. Bill Berend. are honey-
mooning at points of interest in
New Mexico and Colorado. Upon
their rjtum, the young couple will
make their home at Windthorst
where the groom will assist hia
father on the farm. His bride is
the former Miss Angie Humpert,
daughter of Mr. and Mrs. George
Humpert
I extend herewith my heartfelt
appreciation for the support given
me in the recent Democratic Pri-
mary Election. It would be impos-
sible for any candidate to win a
political race without the help, en-
couragement and assistance of
those individuals with whom he is
associated and I now realize the
full value of such support.
It is with a feeling of humility
that I receive the vote of confi-
dence extended to me by the citi-
zens of Archer County. You have
given me two years in office in
which to justify and repay such
confidence and it is my aim to
exert every effort toward that end.
Thank you. I will do by best.
Paul O. Wylie.

CARD OF THANKS
We May Go
Once Again Yet
Once again we are beset by that
seasonal horror of horrors—vaca-
tion time—and which finds our
printer-Linotype operator Roger
Hart and wife, enjoying the invig-
orating climate of Southern Cali-
fornia—Los Angeles, where they
are visiting his mother, Mrs. Annie
Hart, and a sister whose name we
don’t have at hand. In the mean-
time, yours truly and the madam
are basking (?) in the uninvigorat-
ing shadow cast by the 8-ball—in
110-degree weather. We are, how-
ever, getting some valuable assist-
ance from our brother, Obb.
One of these days, though, we
hope it will be different. We hope
the word “vacation” won’t be so
distasteful. W’e’ve been talking vol-
ubly to ourself for the past couple
of hours and if we can manage to
get some sort of cooperation from
our banker we perhaps will be
driving again some 3 or 4 weeks
hence in the shadows of Mt. Hood
along the beautiful Columbia Riv-
er Highway. We have quite a num-
ber of old college chums out there
with whom we’d like to renew ac-
quaintances.
But what we started in to say is
that save for this and another item
or two, credit for the editing of
this paper goes to Mrs. yours truly.

OLNEY, July 30—The Olney
Civil Air Patrol Squadron, of which
several Archer City people ana
members, is making plans to give
five Danish Aero Club cadets and
their two adult escorts a glimpse
of small town Texas life with •
cowboy flavor when they arrive
in Olney next Tuesday morning as
guests of area CAP commanding
officer, Lt. Col. and Mrs. Sid Per-
ryman.
The assignment to Texas of the
group from Denmark is a part of
the annual international cadet ex-
change program in which CAP
units throughout the United States
are hosts to 110 cadets from 14
overseas countries and Canada.
The foreign cadets arrived in
Washington last Monday. They
were guests of President Harry
Truman at a reception in the Rose
Garden on the White House
grounds Tuesday night. Before
leaving to join the host of groups
throughout the United States, the
cadets toured the capitol. After
visiting in the States, th entire
group will meet in New York
where the will be billited in Ho-
tel Astor for a four-day program.
First Texas stop for the Danish
cadets was in Dallas on Wednesday.
On Thursday they went to Kilgore
and are now guests of CAP Group
7. They will fly to Galveston Sun-
day where CAP Group 35 will be
host until they come to Olney.
High point of the Olney trip
will be an overnight stay at the
Waggoner Ranch near Vernon.
Consisting of 508,000 acres, the
ranch is believed to be the second
largest under one fence in the
United States, and is one of the
few large “working outfits” in op-
eration today.
Tuesday afternoon, CAP person-
nel will conduct the Danes on a
sidewalk tour of the town where
Olneyites and people from neigh-
boring towns will have an oppor-
tunity to meet them. The cadet#
will be shown local businesses and
industries and a typical North Tex-
as farm.
During their Olney stay, the
Danes will be guests at luncheon#
given by the local Ministerial Al-
liance and the Lions club.
As the airmen enplane for Dal-
las Thursday afternoon, logs of
their visit will be given them. On
each white cowhide cover, Olney
CAP cadets hand-tooled the last
name of the individual to whom
it will be presented along with
an outline map of Texas.
Other August activities of the
Olney Squadron have been listed
by the commanding officer. Major
Foster Richmond, as a regular
meeting next Monday night, and
a trip to Corpus Christi August 10
to attend the CAP Civil Defense
air show.
