Ammonium nitrate plant at Etter.
Cactus Ordnance is one of the largest
ammonia plants in the world and will
be used by the company to produce
ammenia for nitrogenous fertilizers.
It is expected that present plant ca-
pacity will be doubled from approxi-
mately 70,000 tons to*more than 140.-
000 tons. Under the lease agreement.
United States government may
purchase products from this plant for
i's foreign relief export fertiliser pro-
gram until June 30, 1952. The com-
pany plans to divert the production
cf these facilities to th a relief of our
domestic fertilizer shortage as rap-
idly as the government’s foreign pro-
gram is reduced.
The company’s plans for the fu-
ture also include the acquisition of a
large site on the ship channel near
Houston, where a plant will be built
for the manufacture of ammonium
sulfate, another important type of
fertilizer. This site is of sufficient

more intensive farming. The accelerat-
ed food production of past years has
robbed our domestic farm lands
fertility. To maintain the supply j
food, the productivity of soils must
be restored by replenishing the vital
elements through an increasing use
of fertilizers. The formation of the
new Phillips Chemical Company will
accelerate the availability of such fer-
tilizers, and will inject a healthy com-
