Fire Destroys 6-Room
House, School Bus
And Pickup
Local voluntesr firemen have
been called out three times with-
in the past week. The latest call
was made in the icy cold of Tues-
day morning at 6 o’clock when a
six-room house on East Main
Street, two blocks east of the
depot, was almost completely
destroyed by flames thought to
have started from an overheated
gas stove. The house, owned by
Will McCaslin, was occupied by
Mr. and Mrs. Howard Agee and
their five children. According to
the report, a stove was lighted in
a center room before the family
was up, and when aroused by
smoke and flames, they only had
time to escape from the building
in their sleeping garments. Prac-
tically no furniture, bedding or
clothing were without serious
damage or complete loss, and, re-
portedly, none of the furnishings
was insured.
Although the firemen arrived
too late to save the house, they
prevented the blaze from reach-
ing a nearby garage which boused
the Agees’ car.
At present the Agee family is
living in a residence west of
Wakefield’s Grocery Store.
The second fire destroyed the
Onion Creek school bus, owned
by Jess Cr#wley and driven by
L. B. Baker, last Saturday night
at 11 o'clock at the Baker place,
seven miles east of town. Chief
John Robinson answered the call
and helped to save two tires on
the bus.
A fire of unknown origin was
responsible for the loss of the cab
and bed of a pickup belonging to
Claude Harris, when the blaze
was discovered early Wednesday
morning of last w?ek. All the
tires on the vehicle were saved.
