The day after the “Big Opening”
the reaction begins to take place.
The stockings that were hung by
the fireplace with care, now- lie limp-
less cn the floor, the lights on the
tree seem to have lost their lustre,
the ornaments begin to look just
what they are—plain tinsel and brass
—the wreaths in the windows now
seem to represent something that is
dead—past and gone. In fact to quote
Jack Tarver:
"Tis the day after Christmas and all
all through the jernt
The rugs are a litter with cigarets
burnt.
There are crumbs on the mantle, toys
on the floor
A wilted brown wreath bangs limp on
the door.
And there in the corner, a sad sight
to see ...
The drooping remains of a tireo
Christmas tree.
Is shedding its tinsel and ornaments
shattered
In careless abandon as if nothing
mattered.
The carols are ended, “Silent Night”
has been stilled
And where only yesterday the mul-
titude milled.
No laughter resoundetb, no word is
now spoken
But only the silence remaineth un-
broken.
There are rings on the table where
glasses have set
jA spot on the sofa where the baby
has wet.
The flo<m Is just covered with ribbons
and trappings
And toy trains and fruit cake and
Christmas tree wrappings.
The lamps are left burning, their
shades all awry
While off in the kitchen are dishes
piled high.

Floors have been swept, no; the beds
are unmade
It is a camp spot, where gypsies have
stayed.
And where, one may wonder, is the
negligent spouse
I Whose duty it is to clean up the
house ?
Why, she who should be sweeping
and mopping .
Is down town doing her post-Chnst
mas shopping.
What a sad commentary on Christ-
inas. but it happens “in the best of
regulated families." Along about the
31st when all the trappings and pres-
ents have been put away, our spirits
revive and we think of the new year
with all its possibilities, and of the
new leaves we are turning over, the
resolutions we will make, especially
the one where we will buy ONE pres-
ent each month for the next Christ-
m This is my New Year’s wish for
us all. that we will have the | Peace
■that passeth all understanding, then
and only then will the spirit of Christ-
mas last throughout the year, and
only one law will be necessary .he
Gofaen Rule, which makes us love
our neighbors as ourselves. ’
And in conclusion, may I say again,
“God bless us every one.”
