1 it wna Christmas
Eve and the
world was waiting with eagernc-is for
the morrow. All day the snow had
twen falling until now everything was
covered with ft blanket of downy soft-
ness. At interval* a sharp n,,rth wind
came and drifted the snow Into shel-
tered place*, idling it up In great
white heaps. It was a night when the
warmth and cosiness of home was very
attractive, when men end women hur-
ried eagerly to Warm firesides,
But although a big fire was ),lazing
upon the tucker hearth and everything
in the home bespoke Warmth and
plenty, it was not enough to matte the
Tuckers happy. F,,r they belonged to
that body of humanity that rinds Ha
greatest happiness in having a part In
making the happfneaa of others, espe-
cially those of their own fireside. Up
nnu; a few months ago this ambition
of theirs had always been satisfied, for
upon their only daughter they had lav-
ished all the wealth of affection that
w as possible. But all too soon she had
grown to womanhood and a few
months before had married the man of
her choice, going to make her home la
a distant city. Since that time their
live* had been very empty and. as is
usual in such cases, the advent of
Christmas seemed to make them real-
ise this fact more than ever. For ail
around them other* had some of their
very own to share with them the Joy*
of Christinas time.
Suddenly on the silence that had
fallen between them came a low, feeble
wall—the cry of a little baby. They
both jumped to their feet and stood
in an attitude nf Batoning, Then the
sound came again, louder and lustier
than before and In a moment they
w ore both at the door. "It's a baby!”
they cried In unison, *'a poor little
abandoned bahyl”
And sure enough it w*§ a baby—*
There vvere four children nt the
supper table with father and mother.
The cakes had Just been brought in,
and all the four pairs of eyc-s were
wide with pleasure. This was an un-
expected treat. Usually suppers In
this parsonage were affe!.--, -,f bread
and milk, and prunes or junket for des-
sert. Even father was a little elated
over the nut eaket!
But little Frances was the most
eluted of ah; for suddenly, right on
the spot, n problem that had been
troubling' ter fufj two whole days was
solved. Yea, the nut cakes answered
the problem to perfection. Carefully,
and all unobserved, she slipped the de-
licious cake, with its delectable frost-
trig fob, little Frances knew very well
how delectable orange frosting was!),
Into the big pocket of her pinafore,
Friitltt-s liked cake as much as the
rest of the parsonage brood—hut what
of that! There were things she liked
even better.
Late that night father, th minister,
heard « tiny creak on the stairs. That
didn't bother him. But in a minute
there came another creak, further
down. The minister began to Helen.
Then, last of all a creak at the very
