A plu.ky jailer foiled one of
the most daring jailbreak attempts
ever made at the San Patricio
County Jail, and a criminal with
a mile-long record bit the dust ;n
his futile bid for freedom on Sum
day night when Jailer Howard
Edwards brought into use hit gun
to stop Billie Gene Peiers in a
road attempt to escape.
A blood-spattered corridor where
the two men struggled and a stair-
way stained with the hlord of the
men as Peiers fled after birig
shot tell a story of a vicious
fight which cost the jailor a frac-
tured skull and multiple head in-
juries and sent the prisoster to
the hospnal suffering from a
gun wound which might prove
fatal. . .
Peters, whose home is in Rock-
prirt, was confined in the Sari
Patricio Co. jail awaiting return
to the State penitentiary in Hunts-
ville from where he had been
brought last March to stand trial
on a burglary charge in San Pa-
tricio Co. The prisoner had beer
convicted on a burglary charge
in Aransas Co. during the Febru-
ary term of District Court and
had been sent to the penitentiary
'Den when the 36th District Court
moved to Sinton lor the February
,p -y. Peters was brought back
here to stand trial on .'inothci
