"Hie folk who live in the
upper part of Jedburgh are
known as "the Uppies” and
they play the “Doonies,”
from the lower part of the
town. They gather in the
center of town, a ball is
thrown into the air by the
Provost, and • after that it’s
anybody’s affair.
The crowd of players is so
great that the shop owners
barricade their doors and win-
dows. The play ranges from
one end of the town to the
other, and the winning side is
the one which gets the ball
over one of the two marked
boundaries. A favourite ploy
is for a player to get the ball,
conceal it in his clothes, and
make his way quietly to the
goal.
Jedburgh people don’t
worry about this, points out
Teacher’s Scotch Information
Centre. Their motto is,
“Never mind the ball, get on
with the game!”

"EARLY RAILROAD STATION"
The Hast and West were firmly joined on May 10, 1869
when the last spike was driven into the ground connect-
ing the Union Pacific Railroad to the Central Pacific-
Railroad. The joining of the railroads made possible
travel from coast to coast in a matter of days rather than
the months it took by wagon train. The growth of the
railroad system brought with it the rapid and economical
transportation of products. Cities sprang up along the
railroad routes as more and more people moved west.
