Teenagers Found
To Be Dangerously
Underfet On Tests
NEW YORK, —UP—American
teenagers are dangerously under-
fed, according to a 10-year study
of eating habits which has just
been released.
Children are the best fed up to
the age of two years, the report
states. After that their diet deter-
iorates until it hits a low point be-
tween the ages of 13 and 15.
“The statistics prove American
teenagers are jeopardizing their
health and future well-being be-
cause of misguided and unguided
eatirm habits during these most
crucial years of iiit-auoieseence, ’
said Dr. Pauline Beery Mack, in
making the report public.
Dr. Mack is a noted nutrition au-
thority who headed the nutrition
study while she was associated
with Pennsylvania State College.
The study was sponsored by the
Pennsylvania Department of Health
and partially financed by the Lever
Brothers Co.
Studied 2,536 Young People
The researchers picked 2,536
young people for study, and most
of these, the report states, came
from “a better than average cross
section of the country".
One high school boy found far be-
low health standards spent as much
as $19 a week on between meals
snacks.
Teenage girls made a much poor-
er showing than boys, according to
Dr. Mack's staff. She blamed this
on girls' early awareness of their
figures.
Some of the facts reported in the
survey are startling, others are
amusing. It is hard to realize, for
instance, that only one-fourth of
this typical teenage group are
enough energy foods to keep their
bodies in good condition. Their diets
were compared with those recom-
mended by the food and nutrition
board of the National Research
Council.
One Half Were Nervous
Also startling is Dr. Mack’s
statement that one halt of the en-
tire group tested showed unneces-
sary signs of nervousness which
were traced to diet deficiency.
Girls did better than boys in the
pushup test used to determine en-
durance. But Dr Mack said laugh-
ingly that the boys far surpassed
the girls in the pulse ratio test,
which showed how much of a strain
the exercise put on the heart.
City youngsters ate a wider va-
riety of fresh fruits and leafy vege-
tables than rural residents Boys
drank more milk than girls, but
one third of (lie boys tested con-
sumed less than half of the milk
needed for proper growth
