THE ARCHER COUNTY NEWS - THURSDAY, APRIL 26, 1979 - PAGE SEVEN
Backdoor Theatre’s
“Mr. Roberts” - A
Pleasant Diversion
“This is the first time
we’ve laughed since the
tornado hit," said the man.
His wife nodded agreement.
The couple had just attended
"Mr. Roberts", the current
offering at Backdoor Thea-
tre.
The comment has been
heard over and over in Back-
door's lobby during inter-
mission and after the comic-
. drama, a fact which has sur-
• prised the staff at the
community theatre.
“We really didn’t know
what to expect,” said Bob
King, Backdoor’s Managing
Director. “We felt we had
to go on with the play, that it
might serve a useful purpose
^^he wake of all the tension
confusion. And it looks
mre its just what the doctor
ordered for people who have
lived through this night-
mare.”
“The show itself really
came together after the
tornado,” King continued.
“It was as though the cast
realized that now was not
the time for a poor play.
They pulled together and
have come up with a fine
product-one that all of us at
Backdoor are really proud
of. We held a ‘Liberty
Night’ prior to the Friday
opening and the ninety
people there (Backdoor sup-
porters invited in to see a
preview performance) were
more enthusiastic than I can
remember any of our
audiences being."
“A couple of our season
ticket supporters came Sat-
urday night (April 21).
Their house and most of
their possessions were de-
stroyed, but I’ll never forget
Skirl
DANCE
what they said to me as they
were leaving—’Bob, you'll
never know how much these
few hours have meant to us.
We haven’t laughed, even
smiled, since it happened,
but tonight we realized
we're all right. We have
each other and that is all
that matters. “Mr.
Roberts” helped point that
out to us. Thank you!
Then, as they walked away,
the lady put her arm around
her husband. He did the
same, and there was a
beautiful look of content-
ment on both their faces.
That makes up for a lot,
knowing what you're doing
is appreciated,” King said.
“Mr. Roberts” will con-
tinue through May 5
Thursday, Friday and Satur-
day nights. The long
matinee is Sunday, April 30.
Reservations may be made
by calling (817) 322-5000.
